Morphettville racing preview
The Listed Hill Smith Stakes is the feature event on a nine-race card at Morphettville this Saturday afternoon. The track is rated a Soft 6 at the time of writing, but an encouraging forecast for Friday afternoon and throughout race day points to a likely upgrade. The first race will face the starters at 12:31 local time, while the rail is out 4m the entire circuit.
As stated in our Hill Smith Stakes betting preview, it was hard to miss this colt’s impressive maiden victory at Sale. He is likely to take a sit off the pace and looks to have a bit of class on this field despite the fact he has just broken his duck and is now taking a trip interstate to battle in a Listed race. It does, however, look his for the taking with a little bit of luck on his side.

Phillip Stokes opted to give this 4YO gelding a seven-week freshen up after his tough on-pace victory here. On that day he was three wide with no cover and had no right to win in a high-tempo race, but he took up the running with 200m to go and kept finding under riding from Jake Toeroek. The pair reunite again on Saturday and map to get up on speed one off the rails this time around, and that may prove pivotal in the latter stages of the race.

We are happy to forgive Groot’s last-start effort a fortnight ago on the Parks circuit, where he bombed the jump and had to use plenty of tickets to get back into some sort of a position. He was third across the line in that race but was relegated to fourth on protest. If he can show better barrier manners here, there is no reason why he can’t be fighting out the finish considering he maps to be one pair off the speed.
