A nine-race card is set down for judgement on Saturday at Morphettville. A rainy forecast means we could be racing on something around the Soft 6 mark, so we’ll be looking for the gallopers who can handle a track with the sting out of it.
Saturday racing tips for Morphettville
Race 9 – Instant Celebrity @ $2.30 Neds
Phillip Stokes is starting to build a very strong hand of gallopers for this Spring Carnival, and Instant Celebrity looks set for bigger things this campaign. She may not be a household name just yet, but this unbeaten filly looks the best way to end the day around the country. Her two runs in her debut season as a 2YO were nothing short of impressive, and she comes back in grade after taking out the Listed Oaklands Plate back in July. After an eight-week spell, she looks well placed here. Jake Toerek shouldn’t have too many issues with the wide barrier, as this galloper has shown she can settle back in the field and then let down a nice turn of foot.
Race 1 – Smokin’ Val @ $2.70 Neds
Another resuming 3YO filly gets on top in the opening race. She holds a nomination for the Listed Cap D’Antibes at Flemington as well, but she is an outsider there in a very competitive race. Provided she runs in Adelaide, this looks a smart play to help bookend our best bet. The likely soft track makes this an ideal run for connections considering how easily she won at Murray Bridge on debut at decent odds. We probably won’t see her jump at $20+ in South Australia again.
Race 7 – Campobasso @ $20/$4.80 EW Neds
The former Victorian galloper lines up for his first start under new trainer Brett Campbell after a moderate campaign so far. Given his 12: 4-1-4 record on heavy tracks, these odds may not be on offer for too long if it deteriorates into a heavy track. Perhaps this is a wait-and-see scenario, but in an open field Campobasso looks over the odds and worth a play.
