More heavy rain threatens Golden Slipper Stakes at Rosehill

Wet Rosehill track
TORRENTIAL rain in Sydney over the last week has left Racing NSW a difficult decision on the viability and safety of Saturday’s Golden Slipper.

The Rosehill Gardens race would go ahead today, albeit in Heavy 10 conditions, but if further rain falls on the NSW track over night, the meeting is a good chance to be called off.

A decision has not yet been made on the race and will not take place until the very last minute on Saturday.

The last time the Golden Slipper was called off due to weather was in 1963. The race was then held on the following Tuesday.

When contacted by Horsebetting.com.au, the Australian Turf Club said that at the time this article was published, the race would be going ahead.

“Rosehill was rated a Heavy 10 this morning, by all reports they have had very little rain today. At the moment the meeting is proceeding, the track manager and officials are quite bullish we will go ahead,” an ATC spokesperson said.

“There will be a couple of horses gallop at 6am and Stewards will inspect the track at that time, so either way we won’t have a decision until tomorrow morning.”

Weir retains favouritism in Blamey Stakes despite Black Heart Bart scratching

Tosen Stardom is the -105.26 favourite at Crownbet.com.au for Saturday’s Blamey Stakes at Flemington after the scratching of superstar runner Black Heart Bart.

The CF Orr Stakes winner was a $2.25 favourite at Sportsbet.com.au prior to Friday’s scratching.

The champion trainer said Tosen Stradom, Real Love ($15 WilliamHill.com.au) and Palentino ($2.70 at Sportsbet.com.au) will travel north providing they make it through Saturday unscathed.

“They are all in good shape,” Weir said

“Tosen Stardom really should be running at Rosehill in Sydney but just the rain was so bad it was better to stay here,”

“They are all going well, very well and they will relish the Blamey being over 1600 metres under these conditions and then if they all perform well they will all be sent straight to Sydney.”

Heartbreak for pommy punter as hot-pot favourite goes down

File this one under the “there’s never a good thing” column.

One brave punter unloaded A$804,000 on short-priced favourite Douvan on Wednesday morning as the superstar jumper attempted to make it 15-straight wins in the Champions Chase during day two of the Chelmsford Festival.

After winning A$643,000 on gun horse Alitor the day before, the unidentified punter invested a further $161,000 into Douvan at the $1.20 quote.

Punters thought the horse was a moral heading into the race.

However, in horse racings – and especially jumps racing – anything can and invariably will happen.

Unfortunately for the punter Douvan pulled up lame and only managed a disappointing seventh. The horse is fine but we are not sure the unnamed punter will take any solace from that fact.
