The Group 3 Red Anchor Stakes Preview

The Group 3 Red Anchor Stakes is the first black-type event on the blockbuster 10 race card at Moonee Valley for Cox Plate day. The race has attracted a field of nine three year olds looking to solidify themselves as a class galloper heading into the pointy end of the spring carnival.

Matt Laurie trains the favourite Portland Sky, who will be looking to improve off a last start fourth behind September Run. There looks to be plenty of value in the remainder of the field and we are happy to take on the favourite in the Red Anchor Stakes.

The Red Anchor Stakes is set to jump at 11:40am AEDT

2020 Red Anchor Stakes Betting Tips

Best Bet1. Valaquenta $5.00 with Sportsbet

The Godolphin trained gelding seemingly got too far back to play a pivotal role in the listed Poseidon Stakes three weeks ago at Flemington when he was well beaten by the impressive September Run. In that race the favourite in the Red Anchor Stakes ‘Portland Sky’ finished a length and a half ahead of Valaquenta, but with a bit more of a positive ride on the gelding from the wide gate it may prove pivotal in taking out this Group 3 race.

Next Best7. Bella Nipotina $4.00 with Sportsbet

The Dabernig and Hayes trained filly dropped back into a Group 3 race last time out at Caulfield after competing in the Group1 Moir Stakes the start prior. She maps to sit outside the potential leader Mildred after drawing barrier six. Three starts ago when taking out the Group 3 Quezette Stakes, she did exactly that when sitting outside the leader and proving too strong over the concluding stages, and looks capable of doing the same here.

Best Value4. Ice Ice Baby $9.50 & $2.70 with Sportsbet

Wendy Kelly’s gelding broke through last start for his maiden win after an impressive showing in her first two career starts. He was given no favours in the run here in doing so, when travelling three wide no cover up on speed, but from barrier four Jamie Kah should have no issue in settling him midfield with a bit of cover. If the forecasted rain does eventuate it shouldn’t dampen his chances as he has run into the minor money in both starts on rain affected tracks.
