Montoya’s Secret takes out the Vinery Stud Stakes
MONTOYA’S Secret has completed a hat-trick wins to take out the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes in a hectic finish at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.
The $14 shot at Sportsbet.com.au settled towards the back of the field and weaved a passage through the field to surge to the line along the inside, holding out a fast-finishing Nurse Kitchen ($3.90 at WilliamHill.com.au) and Harlow Gold ($2.20 at Sportsbet.com.au).
Regan Bayliss said Harlow Gold’s run was the perfect prelude to the upcoming Championships.
“Good run. She’ll be peaking Oaks day.” Bayliss said.
Montoya’s Secret’s training pair Leon and Troy Corstens were divided on whether the star runner would take to the field in the Vinery Stud, but Leon said it was his brother who got his wish on Saturday.
If Corey Brown hasn’t soiled himself that is a miracle. Went the same run as Montoya’s Secret. Lucky to not chew turf. #vinery #rosehill

“Main thanks has got to go to Troy.” Leon Corstens said.
“If it was left up to me I would have left her home in the box.
“I didn’t think she’d handle the track. He was the instigator in this, saying no, take her up there. He certainly overruled me and I’m pleased he did.”
The co-trainer said he was not confident his horse could find a path through the traffic to victory.
“I was getting a bit worried about the 1000m,” Corstens said.
“We were going backwards, should be going forwards. We got a good run after that. Everything worked to plan after that so it was really good.”
Winning jockey Noel Callow said he had faith the alley would open up if he kept patient.
“It was a good win, she travelled nice and got onto the right part of the track,” Callow said.
“I drew a nice barrier so it was pretty hard to stuff up.”
The winning jockey said the horse lost its way somewhat in the straight but quickened when it mattered most.
“She just shifted out in the straight, she got there and just got a bit lost, but it was alright, it worked out well.
“She had to dig deep, but she just wandered that last bit, she still held on though, it was a good win.”
