Mixed day at Rosehill for Brenton Avdulla

Jockey Brenton Avdulla has had a mixed day at Rosehill, just 48 hours after escaping serious injury in a fall.

Avdulla rode the first three winners at Newcastle on Thursday but came off the third of those just after the winning post.

He had physiotherapy on a sore shoulder on Friday so he could fulfil his book of rides at Rosehill.

But until late in the afternoon, it looked as if he might go home empty handed, especially after being beaten a half head on the Kim Waugh-trained His Majesty in the Bowerman’s Furniture (1500m) in the seventh of nine races.

He made up for it in the following race when he timed his run on the Waugh-trained Hetty Heights to a nicety with the mare winning the McGrath Estate Agents (1350m).

“I wasn’t feeling too good when His Majesty got beaten,” Avdulla said.

“I got it wrong by a stride but in the next race I got it right by a stride.”

Both the Waugh-trained horses came to Rosehill after unlucky runs in the Provincial Championships final in which His Majesty was third and Hetty Heights sixth.

There was also only a stride to spare when Avdulla steered the Matthew Smith-trained Palazzo Pubblico to a neck win over Miss Tenpins in the final race to bring up a double.
