Missing the Tarzino Trophy could land Miss Wilson back in Aus

MISS Wilson is one of the better performed runners in New Zealand, but a start in the Group 1 Tarzino Trophy next Saturday looks unlikely.

The five-year-old mare won the Group 3 Cuddle Stakes at Trentham last season which ended a four-start winning streak, but it’s currently balloted out of the Hastings feature for local trainer John Bary.

Bary has had to make other plans with the daughter of Stratum, which will likely include a run on the same day in the Telperion Trophy.

“She’s currently 21st on the ballot and by all accounts everyone that gets in will start,” Bary told Horsebetting.com.au. “I can’t see her getting a start.

“She’ll probably run in the rating 85 over 1200m. That will kick her off and she’ll likely carry 60.5kg.”

Bary believes Miss Wilson is going well enough to win carrying the big weight and all going well next Saturday, a return trip to Australia could be on the cards.

Miss Wilson was sent to Australia having had three starts for Bary as a juvenile and despite not reaching the top level over the Tasman, it did record a first-up win at Ballarat over the highly-touted Dagny.

“If she goes well next week and does what I think she will do, we’ll go across to Australia,” Bary said. “I trained her before she went over.

“I gave her two starts as a two-year-old and one at three. I had her primed and ready to go for another start, but the races were called off so she was sent across to be trained by Simon Morrish.”

Miss Wilson is nominated for the Group 1 Windsor Park Plate, where it’s currently a $34 chance with Bet365.com, but Bary won’t be taking a chance on being balloted out again.

“We probably won’t go there because we could be on the ballot again and I’m also worried about the track,” Bary said. “Hopefully it’s good next week, but you can always see September getting some rain.”

Miss Wilson could be targeted towards the Let’s Elope Stakes at Flemington during the Melbourne spring carnival and its recent trial suggested it was back to its best.

“A bit like Let Her Rip – we’ll have a look at the Let’s Elope Stakes, which looks nice for her,” Bary said. “Fillies and mares, set weights and penalties. She’ll get in close to the minimum at Flemington.

“It’s a big roomy track, she’s raced there before and I just think that suits her.

“She’s been working super and has had a good, uninterrupted preparation.

“She’s still woolly in the coat, but that’s got to turn and we can’t fault her work.”

The speedy mare has shown good gate speed in the past, but Bary would prefer to see it take a sit in behind the lead to get a softer trip in transit.

“She starts so well and she’s got a high cruising speed,” he said. “In a perfect world we would be in the trail.

“I’d prefer not to lead as you can sit there and do no work in behind them. She doesn’t always have to race in a handy position, but she does because of her gate speed and cruising speed.
