Midweek racing tips and form at Canterbury, Wednesday January 11

Midweek tips

BETTING on midweek racing is not only a great way to find betting value, but horses to follow for the future.

This Wednesday Canterbury hosts a seven-race card, which includes some competitive racing and some very talented thoroughbreds.

The feature race of the day is the Hyland Race Colours Handicap, which includes no last-start winners, but a host of runners which punters love to back.

You can bet at Canterbury by signing up at Palmerbet.com.au which will give 100% up to $250 on your first deposit.

Race 1 – Tab Rewards Handicap (1900m)

Harper’s Choice is a quality colt for Gerald Ryan which went close at Randwick last start. The three-year-old was a stylish 1.8-length winner two back and with close-up form behind the likes of Morton’s Fork and France, it should be tough to beat in this.

Gothenburg has finished off nicely behind two good types so far and it looks a winning chance here. The well-bred son of High Chaparral finished second behind Krusty on debut before producing a similar effort in rating 67 grade when second behind Axiomatic. Drawn well and it should sit just behind the pace in the small field.

Race 2 – Theraces Maiden Handicap (1250m)

The Pharoah, named after Kentuky Derby-winning American Pharoah, is a Gerald Ryan-trained colt which ran well on debut. The three-year-old colt finished second behind subsequent winner Ebenos at Warwick Farm and the son of Snitzel is expected to improve with racing. It has drawn perfectly in barrier four which will allow jockey Kerrin McEvoy to find a nice position.

Bright Lights Baby is the most experienced runner in the field with four starts. The Chris Waller-trained filly failed to impress when 11th behind Serena’s Pride last start, but that was a hot maiden race and its form prior included a placing behind Purrari on this track in rating 67 grade. This is much easier and the addition of Hugh Bowman is a positive.

Race 3 – Happy 50th Ros Scarlett Handicap (1100m)

Spirit And Fire was a stylish winner on debut at Canterbury and punters should forgive its most recent effort. The Hawkes-trained colt defeated Zumbelina which has won multiple races this season and looks a real up-and-coming talent. The son of More Than Ready then ran 10th in the Heritage Stakes at Randwick behind Guard Of Honour, but that was a step too soon. It has the inside draw here and every chance of winning.

Madame Lily has enough talent to feature at this level. The Snowden-trained mare finished second on this track on debut and it resumed at Wyong with a 1.3-length win. It hasn’t raced since August when it finished second at Warwick Farm, but it is well-weighted at 55.5kg with McEvoy in the saddle and we’re expecting bookmakers to have it safe in the market.

Race 4 – Tabcorp R67 Handicap (1550m)

Fortensky was a winner on debut over subsequent winner Fabvier and it hasn’t been far away since. The Chris Waller-trained gelding battled behind Fanfaron second up and again behind Murraguldrie at Warwick Farm when it finished third. Blake Shinn sticks with it and drawing barrier two can only be seen as a positive.

Prescience is a stablemate to Fortensky which has placed in 10 from 14 starts. The five-year-old hasn’t been a punters best friend throughout its career and it has been a beaten short-favourite in four of its last five starts. It has obvious potential and it it won’t take much long to break the maiden status. The 55.5kg with Bowman in the saddle helps and although it’s racing against proven winners, this isn’t the strongest field ever.

Race 4 tip: Fortensky to win at Sportsbet.com.au

Race 5 – Ranvet’s Neutrolene Handicap (1900m)

Calypso Bay only battled in this grade last start at Warwick Farm, but its form prior to that was worthy of attention. The four-year-old won at Wyong by 1.5 lengths and followed that up with a seven-length romp at Taree as the $1.45 favourite. It drops back in distance for this which looks suitable and we’re expecting the son of High Chaparral to bounce back.

Austin is another runner looking to bounce back from a sub-par effort. The Waller-trained gelding finished seventh at Canterbury last start, but that came on a heavy track and its form prior was solid. The four-year-old won at Kembla Grange in November before placing on this track in December. This will be its ninth start at Canterbury so include in selections.

Race 6 – Hyland Race Colours R72 Handicap (1250m)

Pick Me Up is looking to go one better than last start on this track when it ran second behind Ciarlet. The Tim Martin-trained gelding was a winner prior at Newcastle and the two-time winner at this distance has more growth in store. The son of Encosta de Lago should be well-favoured in the betting and the in-form Adam Hyeronimus takes the ride.

Gendebien is a speedy customer which runs best over this distance. The Paul Perry-trained gelding has won one from nine starts at this distance with six placings and it has the ability to use its superior barrier speed to find a good position. Drawing wide won’t be an issue because of this and apprentice jockey Rachel King takes 2kg off its back. Suited at the weights and it should be tough to beat.

Race 6 tip: Gendebien to win at CrownBet.com.au

Race 7 – Tab R72 Handicap (1200m)

Your Way is a four-time winner from five starts which is from the firing Bjorn Baker stable. The four-year-old won either side of a spell and it was able to defeat the talented Louie Sea Kay two starts back. It has drawn awkwardly in barrier nine and it rises in weight, but it has more scope than most of these and it could feature in the finish again.

Navua Mist is a two-win mare for Chris Waller which has competed in tough fields. The four-year-old finished second behind Kinshachi two starts back at Canterbury and it went out too far last start at Warwick Farm. This will be its eighth start on this track so it has plenty of track experience and a senior rider in Hugh Bowman takes over. Likely to be well-backed in the market.

Race 7 tip: Navua Mist to win at Sportsbet.com.au
