Michael Walker set to ride in jump-outs

Michael Walker will ride in jump-outs later this week as he closes in on a return to competitive racing.

Walker suffered bleeding on the brain in an accident at his home at the start of this month.

The injury kept the Melbourne-based jockey out of the latter part of the Sydney autumn carnival.

Walker says he’s “chomping at the bit” to get back riding.

“I went to see the ENT surgeon yesterday and I’ve been cleared to ride jump-outs on Friday morning,” Walker told Melbourne radio station RSN.

“And that’s just a stepping stone to hopefully getting back in the first week in May.”

Walker said after competing in the jump-outs he would ride trackwork next week before a planned return to the races.

He also needs to complete a cognitive test before he returns to race-riding.

Walker’s latest setback came just a month after he returned from spending four months on the sidelines following hip surgery.

“I just want to get out there and do what I love doing, which is riding thoroughbreds,” Walker said.
