Memsie Stakes 2020 betting tips, odds & form

Caulfield

Melbourne’s first Group 1 of the season arrives this Saturday with the running of the 1400m Memsie Stakes at Caulfield. Six of the 15 runners come through the Group 1 P.B. Lawrence Stakes a fortnight ago over this track and trip. The rail has been moved back into the true position, and the track will be rated somewhere in the soft range. South Australian runner Behemoth is the current favourite, just ahead of Lawrence Stakes winner Savatiano. Perth mare Arcadia Queen is the only other runner in single figures. The speed looks to be genuine, with Begood Toya Mother and Streets Of Avalon likely to take it up and Glenfiddich and Iconoclasm not far away. Behemoth will look to get a fair way back if he is slightly tardy away from barrier two like he has been in the past.

Best Bet
Glenfiddich @ $10

We are going slightly left field by picking the sole three year-old in the race, Glenfiddich. Now trained by Peter Moody, the Fastnet Rock colt worked the house down between races at Sandown alongside Gatting 10 days ago and has had a handful of gear changes which should help him settle. He was by no means a world beater as a two-year-old, with his only win coming in the Mornington Guineas. In saying that, he was edged out in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes over a mile in Sydney by multiple Group 1 winner King’s Legacy and looks the type of horse that will have only improved into his three year-old season. Drawn in barrier 10 with Craig ‘Froggy’ Newitt aboard, he should cross over most of the field to settle just behind the speed. That will put him in the race for a very long way considering he only has 50.5kg on his back. He worked in the nose roll last Wednesday and really trucked along, so we’re glad to see it’s been added here. We think he can give this a real shake at the juicy price and progress into a star of the spring with bigger targets like the Caulfield Guineas and Cox Plate in mind.

Next Best
Cascadian @ $10

Cascadian returned in superb fashion in the Lawrence Stakes a fortnight ago when he finished fourth, beaten under 2.5L. On that day, it was better to be out in the middle of the track, but Damien Oliver elected to come back to the inside with no joy. He hit the line really nicely, suggesting he should be fitter second up here. Jumping from barrier eight, Oliver is likely to settle towards the rear of the field again, which is a slight worry under weight-for-age conditions, but his first-up performance in a similar race should see him run well here. He has placed twice when second up in the past and is also a two-time winner at 1400m, which brings him right into contention. The six-year-old looks set for a big spring, as we highlighted in week one of our Spring Racing Contenders review. Cascadian looks a solid each-way bet here.

Best Value
Arcadia Queen @ $7

The 2019 Kingston Town Classic winner, Arcadia Queen, made her racing return in the Lawrence Stakes and was certainly given a pass mark when fifth. After 41 weeks off the scene, she looks to have come back in good order, working home nicely in her first-up run. She only has to find 80% of her Group 1-winning form back in Western Australia to claim this second up. Damien Lane retains the ride and will need to produce a special considering the wide alley (13), although our speed map sees her settling around six pairs back on the outside, which will allow her to relax and stretch out down the centre. At $7, punters should be seriously considering the Redoute’s Choice mare.
