Melbourne Cup redemption on the cards after Doomben Cup upset

Lee and Anthony Freedman have had plenty of success over the years in the Group 1 Doomben Cup, but maybe none more satisfying than with Our Ivanhowe on Saturday.

The former European import has had an unlucky career since arriving in Australia, but the upset win in the Doomben Cup came as justice for the six-year-old.

“It hasn’t been easy, he’s got issues and high ability, but he hasn’t had a lot of luck,” co-trainer Anthony Freedman said. “He should have finished first three in the Melbourne Cup.”

The son of Soldier Hollow finished 10th in the 2015 Melbourne Cup as a $21 chance and it’s still at the same price for the upcoming 2016 Melbourne Cup on the first Tuesday in November. It was one of the runners which was inconvenienced in the straight and went to the line without moving a muscle.

Freedman paid credit to his team which has worked hard to get Our Ivanhowe race fit.

“Got to say thanks to our two farriers who have done a great job,” Freedman said. “He’s hard work, but hopefully we’ve got him right now.”

Jockey Kerrin McEvoy let the race unfold in front of him as Messene adopted its usual pace-making duties. Volkstok’n’barrell looked the have the run of the race, but was shut out at a vital stage and never recovered.

McEvoy pulled his mount to the outside where it unleashed a good turn-of-foot to finish over the top of race-favourite Hauraki and stablemate It’s Somewhat.

“We got back further in the field than we wanted,” McEvoy said. “Got on the back of Hauraki, got held up, but to the horses credit he showed a turn-of-foot.

“Well done to the Freedman team. I queried them running on this ground today – they proved me wrong. We’re just jockeys, we don’t train them.”

The win gave the Freedman partnership its second group one success in two weeks after Malaguerra won the BTC Cup last Saturday.
