Meech returns from Morocco for Derby ride

From Morocco one week to Morphettville the next.

That’s the scenario for Victorian-based jockey Linda Meech who will ride Manhattan Boss in Saturday’s Group One South Australian Derby.

Last Friday Meech had the chance to ride in Morocco in the latest race of the HH Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies World Championship (IFAHR).

Meech, who broke through at Group One level when she guided Plucky Belle to victory in last year’s Coolmore Classic in Sydney, finished third in the race for Arabian horses at a racetrack in Casablanca, where she competed against other female riders.

“It was definitely a surprise when they rang me to go, but it was a great experience. I really enjoyed it,” Meech told radio station RSN.

“It was a big eye opener compared to riding in Australia but it was great fun and I met lots of new friends.”

Meech was back riding in Victoria on Tuesday and heads to Adelaide on Saturday where her book of rides includes last-start Group Three Chairmans Stakes minor placegetter Manhattan Boss in the Derby.

Meech hasn’t ridden Manhattan Boss in his past two starts but has been on the three-year-old in his only two wins.

“He’s fit and healthy and I galloped him yesterday at Sandown,” Meech said.

“Hopefully he runs the trip and I actually think that won’t be a problem for him.

‘Whether he’s sharp enough to beat the likes of Cool Chap when they get down to the business end is another story.”
