McEvoy galloper earns another 3200m shot

The last time Lucky Lucky Lucky ran in a 3200m race his trainer was convinced he couldn’t stay the distance.

Move forward 14 months and with Lucky Lucky Lucky being a year older, Tony McEvoy is happy to revisit the marathon journey.

Lucky Lucky Lucky contests the Listed Andrew Ramsden Stakes on Saturday after winning over 2800m at Flemington on May 7.

The last time Lucky Lucky Lucky ran over 3200m, he finished ninth behind Tanby in the 2015 Adelaide Cup.

“He was in the market in the Adelaide Cup but he failed to run the trip,” McEvoy said.

“I thought I would go back and have a try again as he’s racing a bit differently now.

“He’s a bit older and bit wiser but the big question mark is the 3200, having been there before and failed.

“But the way he ran out the 2800 the other day I thought he was worth another chance.”

As part of his conditioning and strengthening work, Lucky Lucky Lucky has been schooling over hurdles with the prospect of one day racing over jumps.

McEvoy said the gelding had enjoyed the experience.

“He trialled nicely over jumps at Warrnambool but while he’s going well on the flat we’ll keep him to that for now,” McEvoy said.

“The jumps will be to extend his career later on but hopefully that schooling has helped him strengthen up for the 3200 metres on Saturday.”

Lucky Lucky Lucky is on the fourth line of betting at $8.50 with the Darren Weir-trained Master Zephyr, a last start fourth in the Warrnambool Cup, the $4.20 favourite.
