Material Man impresses in Lark Hill trial prior to Melbourne move

Material Man wins heat 4 at Lark Hill on Tuesday, January 29.

WESTERN Australian star Material Man impressed on the trial track on Tuesday, winning heat 4 at Lark Hill as his maiden Melbourne preparation beckons.

The 2018 Perth Cup winner was taken to the front early and wasn’t pushed along with any great urgency, taking out the trial with relative ease. The upcoming Victorian preparation will be the first time Material Man has raced competitively since a second placing in the 2018 Group 1 Kingston Town Classic.

The first race on the agenda for Material Man is the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes on February 9 with a possible eye on the inaugural All Star Mile later in the campaign.

Material Man is at the $41 quote via online bookmaker Sportsbet to win the 2019 CF Orr Stakes.

Ideally the preparation culminate with a start in the All Star Mile, but with the public voting in 10 of the 14 competitors, the connections will almost certainly need to be voted in to get a start.

Owner Michael MacDermott urged his state compatriots to get behind their export ahead of the debuting feature.

“It would be nice to think West Australians would give us a bit of support and vote for him,” MacDermott said.

“We need some help to get into the race and if they could take some time out to vote, that would be amazing. I see him as a bit of a people’s horse.

“He’s no Kingston Town, Winx or Black Caviar, but he’s a horse that tries his heart out all the time. He reflects the attitude of West Australians to have a go.”
