Market movers report from Doomben, Rosehill and Moonee Valley

Crownbet Market movers

PUNTERS were smiling throughout the day last Saturday as the bookmakers got taken to the cleaners.

The three major meetings included Doomben, Rosehill and Moonee Valley and besides a couple of upset winners, punters cashed in big time with notable favourites winning their respective races.

The big race of the day was the Group 1 Queensland Oaks at Doomben where favourite Egg Tart proved far too classy – one of many favourites to give punters a shout in the Sunshine State on a cracking day of racing.

Market movers report – Doomben

Race 1: Pardoe ($3.80), from Italia Bella and Magnufighter

Pardoe continued its great run of form with another front-running display. It was specked in from $4 to $3.80 and got punters off to a good start. There was a little specking for the placegetters with Italia Bella firming in from $7.50 to $7.

Race 2: Cellargirl ($6.50), from Skate To Paris and She’s Our Star

Cellargirl stayed steady throughout the betting and punters saw good value in its quality form last campaign. Most of the money was placed on Pretty Fast which firmed in from $5 to $4.40, but it was an evenly-spread betting affair punters were able to secure good each way value.

Race 3: Payroll ($5), from Maryore and Double Impact

Punters were onto something here as $2.50 favourite High Midnight drifted remarkably to $3.20 late in the piece. They came late for Payroll which opened at $7 and it proved to be the right decision. The second and third runners were big drifters in the market, but punters came away happy with this result.

Race 4: Single Gaze ($3.30), from Rudy and High Church

The small field of only five runners constituted in a dour betting affair. The first four runners all drifted from their opening quotes with only the ill-fated Cylinder Beach gaining support.

Race 5: Snitty Kitty ($4.40), from Upstart Pride and Prompt Return

The writing was on the wall for Snitty Kitty after a good showing last start and it showed that electric gate speed to win at Doomben. Right on the mark were punters which backed it into $4.40 after being $5.50 on Friday. The next best backed runner was Prompt Return ($7.50 to $4.40) which battled on well for third.

Race 6: Deploy ($4.80), from Dothraki and Perfect Dare

Deploy fought from off the canvas and scored a big result for punters which backed it in late from $5.50. The Gerald Ryan-trained runner held off Dothraki which also carried plenty of money. Each way punters got a bit of Perfect Dare which moved in two points to $21 after opening at $23. The interesting runner was The Virginian which opened with plenty of support, but barely moved in the market since.

Race 7: Egg Tart ($3), from Pygmy and Oklahoma Girl

The market movement doesn’t reveal much, but Egg Tart was heavily backed in the Oaks. The Chris Waller-trained filly moved from $3.30 into $3 and considering the size of the field, that’s some significant movement. It was a bad result for bookmakers which took action on Egg Tart all week, but with Pygmy running second at odd of $51 after opening at $18, they got some back.

Race 8: Bonny O’Reilly ($2.05), from Selita and Palazzo Pubblico

The roll continued with the Bjorn Baker-trained mare returning big time for punters. We suggested following Bonny O’Reilly in last week’s edition of the market movers report and the punters came calling. It was backed in from $4.20 into $2.05 and it even touched $1.95 at one point. There was very little money for anything else and that was understandable given the class of the win.

Horse to follow from Doomben:
We won’t suggest following Bonny O’Reilly again because that bird has flown, instead we recommend Rudy. It ran a credible race on an unsuited track and it copped plenty of interference from Cylinder Beach.

Market mover report – Rosehill

Race 1: Silence ($12), from Intrinsic and Last Starfighter

There was no money for Silence which drifted from $8. Most of the money was placed on Revenire and Intrinsic, with the latter finishing off well for second. Kanga’s Eye was heavily backed during the week, but punters backed off on race day.

Race 2: Test The World ($13), from Arbeitsam and Dissolute

We can guarantee that Test The World won’t pay double figures again after punters got burnt. Heavy money was on New Universe, but the former Kiwi runner came to the end of its preparation and didn’t feature in the result. Despite winning form, punters overlooked Test The World which scored a rare result for bookies.

Race 3: Cottage ($15), from Reiby Rampart and Labdien

The bookmakers struck again in race three with Cottage. It had put in a couple of ordinary performances this campaign, but improved out of sight to score at nice odds. There wasn’t much money for anything else with favourites Dagny and Wahng Wah both drifting.

Race 4: Zamax ($3.30), from Call The Captain and Cliff

Punters got back on track with Zamax which scored an impressive Highway Handicap win, despite racing greenly throughout. It remained steady in the betting throughout and punters were able to get value with Cliff which closed into $9 late after opening at $11.

Race 5: Just Dreaming ($5), from Uptown Lad and Walk The Streets

Just Dreaming opened at $6.50 and was backed nicely from the outset. It had to fight hard for the win over the closing Uptown Lad and Walk The Streets which was backed into $5.50 after opening at $8.50 and was the clear black booker from the race.

Race 6: Firsthand ($3.40), from Wild ‘n’ famous and Pick Me Up

The bookmakers got smacked with Firsthand firming in from an opening quote of $6. The talented runner was backed heavily throughout the week and punters didn’t want much to do with the other runners. There were a few drifters at skyrocket odds and they didn’t trouble the opposition.

Race 7: Supply And Demand ($3.40), from Tucanchoo and Alegria

The money was well-placed again as favourite Supply And Demand ($4.40 into $3.40) was too good for them. Tucanchoo looked a great each way bet and some punters were able to secure nice place odds for the Victorian. Alegria continued its consistent form in third with the in-form So Willie finishing out of the money.

Race 8: Royal Tudor ($7.50), from Sir Bacchus and Old North

They came and they conquered with Royal Tudor which was smashed into $7.50 after opening at $14. In a strange move, it closed into $4.80 during the week, but drifted out late with money coming for Invinzabeel and Snoopy, but they couldn’t muster enough to reel in the winner.

Race 9: Louie Sea Kay ($9), from Sultan Of Swing and Dreamforce

There wasn’t much confidence with Louie Sea Kay, but it looked a good bet and the $9 was a great price. Money came for Dreamforce ($5.50 into $3.60), but it had to settle for third placing behind New Zealand runner Sultan Of Swing which drifted on track.

Horse to follow from Rosehill: Look out for Walk The Streets in something a little easier this season. It had talent at the midweek level and punters should be able to capitalise.

Market movers report – Moonee Valley

Race 1: Wanted Diva ($4.80), from Behave and Wired

There was little betting movement in this race. Wanted Diva moved from $5 into $4.80 and most other runners stayed steady in the market.

Race 2: Whistle Baby ($6.50), from Telopea and Foreign Affair

Whistle Baby was a drifter after getting to $4.40 earlier in the week as most of the support came for Telopea and Majestic Lass. Punters came close to pulling off the big win, but Whistle Baby was too strong in the run to the line.

Race 3: Ability ($5), from Orujo and Core Breach

Ability lived up to its name and the push for its trainer was enough for punters to jump on. It was talked up earlier in the week which forced bookmakers to shift it from $7 into $5. Miss Vista was the drifting favourite and punters were right to jump off its back.

Race 4: Greviste ($4.40), from The Passage and A Moving Place

The first two home were the best-backed runners in the market. The Passage was backed in from $4 to $2.90, but there was a fair amount of each way money on the winner. Boosting payouts was A Moving Place which paid $126 to win and it’s fair to say not many punters had it on their tickets.

Race 5: Magic Consol ($17), from Cosmic Lights and Coldstone

It’s hard to tell whether bookmakers liked this result or not, but either way Magic Consol opened at $71 and was quickly backed into $17. The big move came early in the week and it steadily shortened, so there’s some punters out there counting their cash. Money for Coldstone and Mr Individual came late.

Race 6: Violent Snow ($31), from Lopartega and Every Faith

There was a big plunge for Lopartega ($12 into $5.50), but it just missed as Violent Snow scored a result for bookmakers. It was a steady drifter since markets opened with the money coming for the top three elects in the betting.

Race 7: Camdus ($3.60), from Chase The Horizon and Leodoro

Punters got back into the saddle with Camdus. It firmed nicely into $3.60 after opening at $6.50 and its class was on show. Both placegetters were drifters in the market, but still maintained plenty of support. There were no moves on any other runners.

Race 8: Gallic Chieftain ($3.20), from Rose Of Virginia and Hursley

Punters went bang bang at Moonee Valley with the favourite dropping in price from $5.50. The biggest surprise of the race was seeing Melbourne Cup runner Rose Of Virginia fight out the finish at booming odds of $81 (opened at $41).

Race 9: Katsuro ($4.60), from Benz and Liberty Song

There was a stack of late money on the winner and it paid off. Katsuro was at $6 when markets opened, but in a tight betting affair it was the best backed.

Horse to follow from Moonee Valley: Rose Of Virginia is a cups horse and it had no right to contest that finish. It will only improve with more distance so follow it with some interest.
