Market movers and fluctuations report for Doomben and Randwick
IT was a mixed day for punters on Saturday, especially at Doomben where the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap, Queensland Derby and the J.J. Atkins were all run.
Punters scored plenty of success with some well-backed runners, but it’s never a pretty site when an odds-on favourite gets beaten in a group one feature.
That being said there was plenty of joy to be had by punters at Doomben and Randwick last Saturday which saw a good mix of favourites and long-shot winners come into the money.
We start the market mover review at Doomben which started on a positive note for punters.
Marker mover report – Doomben
Race 1: All Over Bosanova ($4.40), from Tactical Advantage and Rare Occurrence
Punters assessed the opening race to be a two-horse affair and they were spot. Both All Over Bosanova and Tactical Advantage were well-backed in the market, with the winner firming in from a top quote of $5.
Race 2: Miss Gunpowder ($3.80), from Too Good To Refuse and Jimmy Rea
The Victorians had a day out at Doomben and it started with Miss Gunpowder, which was backed into $3.80 after opening at $5.50. The quality runner was too good for its rivals in a tight finish. Too Good To Refuse was another well-backed runner at odds which gave punters a grand result.
Race 3: Religify ($3.80), from Crack Me Up and Moher
The usual support for Religify wasn’t to be seen on race day, but it still started as the equal favourite at CrownBet.com.au. The Chris Waller-trained runner was always going to be suited to the conditions and the loyal punters got rewarded. Outside Crack Me Up boosted trifecta payouts at $26 for the win.
Race 4: Prompt Response ($4.60), from My True Love and Bonny O’Reilly
Prompt Response was a big go with bookmakers – firming in from $7.50. It scored an overdue win over My True Love which was well over the odds at $13 and quality Bonny O’Reilly which endured a wide run, but managed to battle on well for third after drifting from $3.80 to $5.50.
Race 5: Salsonic ($15), from Volpino and Niccanova
There wasn’t much confidence in the market with any runner. Salsonic flew under the radar and race-favourite Niccanova was a drifter from $3.80 to $4.60. Money came for Victorians Oak Door and Sylpheed, but they couldn’t muster.
Race 6: Capital Gain ($21), from Aloisia and Taking Aim
This was the first big blow for punters which backed Melody Belle into $1.75 from its opening quote of $2.30. Punters of Capital Gain would be hoping they waited till the last minute as it drifted from $7.50 to $21 at its final fluctuation. Aloisia was also a noted drifter with bookmakers.
Race 7: Ruthven ($3.20), from Rockstar Rebel and Ana Royale
It was an all-Victorian trifecta in the Derby with the heavily-backed Ruthven emerging victorious. The Ciaron Maher-trained stayer was smashed into $3.20 after opening at $6 and punters were left cheering in one of the Doomben features. The underrated Rockstar Rebel added some value to the multiples.
Race 8: Impending ($21), from In Her Time and Clearly Innocent
The bookmakers scored a victory in the Stradbroke as Impending caused the upset. The Darren Beadman-trained three-year-old was too good for favourite Clearly Innocent, which stayed steady in the market throughout the week. Some long-shot runners were backed at odds, but there were no noticeable moves in the Stradbroke.
Race 9: Chocante ($18), from Single Gaze and Pemberley
The Kiwis finally struck in the final race of the day with Chocante which was a drifter in the betting. Grand Dreamer moved in from $18 to $10, but it was a quiet race for bookmakers.
Horse to follow from Doomben: Salsonic
Salsonic is a hard horse to follow, but it should offer some intrigue in the spring. It may have won only two races, but if the tempo is on up front it has a deadly sprint and it could take out some undercard races on the major race days.
Market mover report – Randwick
Race 1: Champagne Cuddles ($2.10), from Lipizzan and Pymble
The four-horse field didn’t inspire much confidence for punters, but the well-backed favourite did get the job done with style.
Race 2: Memes ($4.20), from In Times Of War and Difficult To Get
Strong money came for Memes and it closed as the equal favourite with In Times Of War despite opening at $6 compared to $3.80. Punters correctly predicted the result and even backed the third placegetter into $10 after opening at $16.
Race 3: Clipper ($1.75), from Conniving and Nictock
Clipper appeared to be one of the better bets of the day and it showed why. It cleared away for an easy win and punters that secured the early $2.65 were over the moon. There was some specking for stablemate Nictock, but it couldn’t keep up with the winner.
Race 4: Plot Twist ($16), from Richard Of Yorke and Broadside
There was a distinct lack of confidence with punter in this race and they were wise to stay clear as $16 shot Plot Twist handled the heavy conditions best. Richard Of Yorke had specking, but only looked a winner for a brief moment.
Race 5: Nettoyer ($14), from Prometheus and Roseito
The stable knew a good result was coming and so did some punters. Nettoyer boomed home to score an emphatic win at odds of $14 after opening at $26. The big plunge came off in a race which didn’t have a clear favoured choice.
Race 6: Heavenly Anna ($3.80), from Dagny and Lani Girl
Punters were spot on in the sixth as Heavenly Anna ($6 into $3.80) came down the outside of runners to win. Dagny was backed into favouritism earlier in the week, but it didn’t have much support come race day. Lani Girl did well for third after attracting money at nice odds.
Race 7: The Monstar ($9), from Kudero and Inz ‘n’ Out
The big betting plunge of the day almost paid off with Kudero ($9.50 into $3), but it was The Monstar which gave the punters a scare. Due to the big move on Kudero, most other runners stayed steady in the market.
Race 8: Wildflower ($10), from Loving Home and Birds Of Tokyo
Bookmakers took plenty of action on Wildflower which opened at $26, but the result would have been a positive for bookies. Loving Home had no support at $31 and Birds Of Tokyo was holding steady. Moves came for Curragh and El Novio, which finished just in behind.
Race 9: Stella Ombra ($10), from Clear The Beach and Star Reflection
Bookmakers narrowly escaped a big result for punters as both Clear The Beach and Star Reflection were backed in. Star Reflection was the biggest move $12 into $5, but it had to settle for third.
Horse to follow from Randwick: Dagny
It has potential, but will likely be saved for better tracks in the spring.
