Mackay racing tips

Mackay’s sprint feature, the Mackay Newmarket, is will be run and won from 3:34pm AEST on Friday with a full field of 14 to face starter. The 1300m event looks to be a high-quality race with the likes of Inquiry, Monsieur Gustave and a tangent of quality sprinters all engaged in the $65,000 feature. They’ll run a long at a solid clip, with race favourite Inquiry the likely leader from barrier two. Rockhampton Newmarket winner Doctor Zeus and stablemate Monsieur Gustave will be handy, as will Fratellino.

Best Bet
Fabulonh @ $10

Darryl Hansen won the Rocky Newmarket with Doctor Zeus and we expect his runners to be very hard to beat in the Mackay version. We are leaning towards Fabulonh just ahead of Monsieur Gustave at this rate, putting our faith in the big grey galloper to finish strongly over the top of them. His narrow defeat last start at the Sunshine Coast on a very heavy surface is strong form for this race, where he should get all the favours in the run from barrier 11 under Chris Whiteley. Punters can expect to see him settle midfield and wind up in the concluding stages. Fabulonh hasn’t won over 1300m before, but they should be running along enough to set it up for him to run on.

Next Best
Monsieur Gustave @ $9.50

Coming off a super effort to run third in the Listed Eye Liner Stakes at Ipswich a fortnight ago is Monsieur Gustave. First up off a 20-week spell, the son of Al Maher shot to the front only to be run down right on the line at massive odds. His second-up record is fantastic (9:5-0-1), so we can definitely expect him to improve here for Ashley Butler. Set to jump out of gate 12, the seven-year-old will go forward and be expected to tough it out with the favourite, Inquiry. This is Monsieur Gustave’s pet distance, so we can expect the three-time time Listed winner to be right in the finish in what is an easier race than his last-start third.

Next Best Again
Bat A Kat @ $6

Mark Lehmann’s Bat A Kat is coming off a brilliant win at Rockhampton three weeks ago in his first start in 18 months. The Falvelon gelding worked his way to the outside under Ash Butler and chased hard to arrive in time over the 1200m trip to beat All Eez and The Baker. Previously with Hansen, the five-year-old gelding finished in the top two in his first nine starts in the Southeast corner before finding some tougher race in his four-year-old season. Drawn ideally for Bubba Tilley in gate one, he should land just off the pace and pinch the runs in the straight. He can only improve second up (3:2-1-0) and is a definite winning chance.
