Lyricist on song for Doomben Roses

Promising filly Lyricist is on a mission at Doomben to boost her prize money to ensure she makes the field for the Group One Queensland Oaks.

Lyricist has won her past three starts but was the last horse into the main field for Saturday’s Group Two Doomben Roses (2000m), the traditional Oaks lead-up.

There has been an unusually large number of fillies vying for positions in the Oaks and there is jostling among about a dozen horses to earn enough prize money for a start.

The Toby Edmonds-trained Lyricist’s last-start win at the Sunshine Coast lifted her earnings to $35,000.

“We missed a lead-up run in the Gold Coast Bracelet and we went to the Sunshine Coast for a win. But we only just made it into the Roses on Saturday,” Edmonds said.

“I suppose if we are to be assured of making the Oaks field we would want to get some prize money on Saturday.”

“There seems to be a big number of interstate and kiwi horses here for the Oaks.”

First prize for Saturday’s race is $112,000 but even the $7000 for running fourth would probably put Lyricist into the Oaks field on June 4.

Edmonds believes Lyricist would not be out of place in the Classic.

“She has always shown us plenty on the track,” he said.

“She can reel off some very good sectional times. If she can get into a nice position after the start she will give them something to think about.”
