2020 Lough Neagh Stakes racing tips

The Listed Lough Neagh Stakes over 1350m is the feature and final race of the day at the Doomben meeting on Saturday, and it has attracted a stellar field of 14 after scratchings. Headlined by the Stradbroke Handicap winner, Tyzone, it is a wide-open betting race with Red Chase and Outback Barbie sharing favouritism ahead of Emerald Kingdom, Niccanova, Soxagon and Tyzone. It’ll be a solid clip out in front with Emerald Kingdom, Phantom Falcon, Epic Girl and Sandbar all go-forward horses.

Phantom Falcon impressed us at his most recent outing when fourth at Doomben behind Racecourse Road. Over 1200m that day he was simply out-sprinted early and got further back than usual but boxed on gamely out wide. Up to 1350m in what will be a race where he can control the speed from barrier six should suit him down to the ground. He has only had the one run on wet tracks and managed to finish third, so he should get through the ground alright. He has never been out of the quinella over 1350m, loves Doomben and split The Harrovian and Desert Lord two starts back, which is some of the best Queensland form going. At around $20 with some online bookmakers, he is a genuine chance here.

Outback Barbie hit the line very nicely here a fortnight ago when third in the George Moore behind Hard Empire and Jonker. Off that run, she should be ready to step up to 1350m despite performing below her best at this trip in the past. Doomben is where she does her best work, and the Tony Gollan and Michael Rodd combination has picked up where it left off from years gone by. Drawn in barrier four, she’ll get the economical run into the race and could be too good for them en route to the Magic Millions QTIS Handicap.

Despised outsider of the field is Les Ross’ River Racer. The seven-year-old Hidden Dragon mare has been out of form for well over 12 months now, with her last win coming back in August 2019, but she grows a leg on heavy tracks and placed in the Listed Glasshouse Handicap at the Sunshine Coast in July, 12 months after winning the same race on a very wet track. While she has beaten only one runner home in both runs this prep, she steps up to a suitable trip and gets the right conditions. She’ll get back from barrier 15, but if the runs come her way, she will get through the mud with no worries at all.
