Lord Of The Sky lands the Bletchingly

Lord Of The Sky

THE enigmatic Lord Of The Sky is a winner once again after it scored an all-the-way win in the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday.

Having been backed and beaten in many races throughout its career, punters got the best of the bookies on this occasion as the five-year-old blitzed its rivals in the $160,000 feature.

Damien Oliver was able to find the lead with ease and it kicked clear around the home turn. Race-favourite Fast ‘N’ Rocking finished off late down the outside, but Oliver had plenty in hand nearing the line with the $8 chance at Sportsbet.com.au

Trainer Robbie Laing said it had improved since running in the Group 3 Monash Stakes a fortnight ago.

“I thought he had improved a lot, he was second up and went into the first race without a trial,” Laing said.

“I said to Ollie (Damien Oliver) we’ll know pretty quick if he’s going to win – if he bounces and they sit off him they won’t get near him.”

The course specialist has won six races at Caulfield in which could possibly be its final year on the track.

“Last year we raced him over summer – he was fourth in the Newmarket, beaten by Chautauqua in the group one, had any of those been wins he would have been at stud now,” Laing said.

“He suffered a terrible tendon injury in this race last year so he’s got up off the canvas really.

“I’d love to have a crack at a 1400 metre weight-for-age race and ride him the same way. We’ll look at the PB Lawrence or the Memsie.”

Laing hasn’t ruled out travelling overseas to pick up some valuable international black type.

“There’s not a stallion in Australia that can go with him if you let him run but we haven’t got a home for him yet,” Laing said.

“There’s an Englishman interested and we might take him to France for the big sprint there on Arc de Triomphe day in October.”
