Lindsay Park colt to be spelled after impressive debut win

David Hayes has made plans to spell impressive debut winner Tycoon Dancer after its win at Caulfield on Saturday

THERE was plenty of early betting confidence to suggest Tycoon Dancer could win the opening race at Caulfield on Saturday and it did just that in style.

The Lindsay Park-trained two-year-old was backed into $2.80 before drifting remarkably late to $5 at Bet365.com, but the early money was spot on and it will now be spelled before embarking on a promising three-year-old season.

The son of Written Tycoon sat outside the speed set by Easy Beast in the Chef’s Hat 2YO Plate, before getting the upper hand close to the line. It found good natural speed, but co-trainer David Hayes believes the leggy colt will mature into a handy three-year-old later this year.

“It’s a great result to get it at his first run,” Hayes said. “He’s not really a two-year-old type, he’s a leggy horse that I think will come back as a good really three-year-old.”

Despite having had only one trial in preparation for its debut, Hayes is adamant the classy type will make a better mature horse and confirmed his intentions to put the colt aside for the winter.

“We’ll definitely put him aside. He just had the one trial going into this and was very impressive at Geelong,” Hayes said.

“The horse he beat came out and won the other day, so there’s a lot of signs that he’ll train on at three.”

Winning jockey Luke Nolen gave the colt a good trip in transit and despite being on debut, the colt showed good poise in the run to the line.

“He’s a real professional,” Nolen said. “First start at the races – he took it all in his stride.

“That attitude will take him a long way.

“He’s a winner on debut and it’s not how you win them, it’s how you celebrate them.”

Running another solid placing was Easy Beast, which has placed in all three career starts to date.

The Richard Laming-trained colt finished third on debut behind Al Passem before running second at Bendigo. After setting a strong gallop in front, it’s only a matter of time before the Super Easy colt breaks through for its maiden win.

Barney Allen ran on well into third, but was a fair distance from the first two home.
