Launceston Cup tips & form for Wednesday, February 28

Tasmania is hosting quality racing this Wednesday, with the Group 3 Launceston Cup (2400m) the headline event.

There’s a huge ten race card with listed events everywhere you look, so let’s take a look at the card and see if we can’t find some winners.

Race 1 – Maiden (1400m)

Ivoryman has two placings from four first-up attempts and will be right in contention here. This is an extremely hard event to kick off the card, and we’re trusting the horse to perform fresh once again.

Race 1 tip: Ivoryman to win ($2.10 at William Hill)

Race 2 – Benchmark 62 (2100m)

Veteran runner Reann’s Diamond can surprise here. The mare showed great improvement in this grade last time out, finishing second behind Barjeel on February 18. The horse has placed at the track and grading in the past and we think can cause a huge boilover.

Race 2 tip: Reann’s Diamond to win ($51 at Ladbrokes)

Race 3 – Benchmark 68 (1600m)

[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1182040_03]

Barjeel won strongly last time out be two lengths at close to this level and we think can go back-to-back. The horse’s rating suggests it can be competitive once again, and we’re expecting it to make an impact.

Race 3 tip: Barjeel to win ($6 at Sportsbet)

Race 4 – Class 1 Handicap (1200m)

Treeconi is our top pick in a hard to predict event. The horse won its maiden event strongly at Hobart and before that it recorded a second placing at Launceston, so it is familiar with the track. The gelding caught our eye with that turnaround and we believe it can progress from here.

Race 4 tip: Treeconi to win ($8.50 at Sportsbet)

Race 5 – Open Event (1200m)

[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1182040_05]

City Of Dreams was only a length away from winning at Launceston on February 14 and we think it can go one better here. The horse gets a great gate and a drop in weight which will help immensely.

Race 5 tip: City Of Dreams to win ($5 at William Hill)

Race 6 – Gold Sovereign (1200m)

[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1182040_06]

The undefeated Mystic Journey looks poised to go well here. A win would be the horse’s fourth-straight success and we’re backing it to do the business once again.

Race 6 tip: Mystic Journey to win ($3.20 at William Hill)

Race 7 – Open Handicap (1200m)

[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1182040_07]

Gee Gee Double Dee didn’t get a lot of luck last time out, but before that it was pinging along, winning three-straight. We’re looking for a strong bounce back performance.

Race 7 tip: Gee Gee Double Dee to win ($2.65 at Crownbet)

Race 8 – Mowbray Stakes (1600m)

[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1182040_08]

Star local Hellova Street bounced back in the right way on February 11 with a strong win at Hobart and we think it can go back-to-back. It took the horse three races to get back into the winner’s groove following a return to the home-state, but the penny seems to have dropped. Hellova Street is the best bet of the night.

Race 8 tip: Hellova Street to win ($1.45 at Sportsbet)

Race 9 – Launceston Cup (2400m)

[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1182040_09]

We backed Pretty Punk to deliver at odds last-time out in the Hobart Cup and it duly saluted. Why jump off now? The horse rises slightly in weight but gets the optimal gate and will be right in the mix to be the third horse in five years to do the Hobart/Launceston Cup double.

Race 7 tip: Pretty Punk to win ($5 at Crownbet)

Race 10 – Benchmark 64 (1200m)

[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1182040_10]

Gee Gee Spitfire has been consistent over the past five runs, placing four times and finishing no worse than fourth in that stretch. The horse drops 3kg for this race and gets gate three to jump from, tick and tick. We’re backing a home-towner to finish us off with a win.

Race 8 tip: Gee Gee Spitfire to win ($11 at Neds)
