Latrobe third in first run for the year

The Lloyd Williams-owned Irish Derby winner and Mackinnon Stakes runner-up Latrobe has run third in his first start for the year in the Group Three Alleged Stakes at Naas.

The race was won by the Aidan O’Brien-trained Magical, winner of the Group One British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes at Ascot in October before going on to push Enable when runner-up in the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Churchill Downs.

The Joseph O’Brien-trained Latrobe ran a close second to Trap For Fools in the Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington in November before being unplaced in the Hong Kong Vase a few weeks later.

Aidan O’Brien and jockey Ryan Moore combined for another significant win on the program with two-year-old Monarch Of Egypt giving American Triple Crown winner American Pharaoh his first winner with his first runner.

Monarch Of Egypt led and sprinted clear to score by 2-3/4 lengths.

“Hopefully, he will be a Royal Ascot horse – but he’d need to run again,” O’Brien said.

“He’s babyish and was a bit green when he got there. He’s a lovely, uncomplicated horse – lovely mind, and was just ready to come to the track.”
