Latin Boy to go like a bat out of hell

Trainer Richard Freedman believes Latin Boy’s recent course record run for 900 metres at Newcastle should not be taken lightly.

Latin Boy is one of several interstate horses chasing the $90,000 Bat Out Of Hell (900m) at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

The race is regarded as the short-course championship of Queensland and has attracted even more attention this year because the winning trainer will receive a top-of-the-range Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Freedman feels Latin Boy is an ideal horse for the race and says the gelding is better suited at the Gold Coast than his last-start failure in a stakes race at Rosehill.

At his previous start on March 9, Latin Boy ran a course record 50.91 sec to win at Newcastle where he broke 33 sec for his final 600m.

“He has won five of his seven starts for me so he has been good and consistent,” Freedman said.

“He ran a course record for 900 metres at Newcastle two starts back. They run a lot of 900 metre races there so it is something to take note of because it wasn’t just a case of breaking a record at a distance run once or twice a year.”

As for the Harley Davidson if Latin Boy wins on Saturday?

“I have a car licence not a bike licence. So we would have to see,” Freedman said.

Freedman will be back in Queensland with promising stayer Roman Son later in the winter.

“At this stage you will probably see me again on Brisbane Cup day,” he said.
