Laing switches on to Champagne mode

Robbie Laing has already made one successful raid on the Sydney carnival and the Victorian trainer is hoping to pull off another coup.

The Laing-trained Missrock won last week’s Group Three Percy Sykes Stakes.

The Champagne Stakes wasn’t on the radar for Jaws Of Steel, but Laing changed plans when entries for the Group One race were extended.

“My wife Rachael rang me at the track and said there were only eight in the Champagne,” Laing said.

“She asked if we had anything and I thought our little 1500-metre last-start winner (Jaws Of Steel) at Mornington would do.”

Jaws Of Steel is one of the outsiders but has followed the same travel schedule from Melbourne as Missrock.

As Missrock did, Jaws Of Steel left for Sydney on Wednesday night and Laing is hoping an early arrival will allow the two-year-old extra time to recover.
