Laing set to aim higher with Jaws Of Steel

Trainer Robbie Laing may be forced to raise the bar after the strong win of Jaws Of Steel at Mornington.

Laing was hoping to win a country race with the son of Sharkbite but may now look interstate for a black-type race with the colt.

Ridden by Brad Rawiller, Jaws Of Steel ($8.50) scored by 1-1/4 lengths from Pop ($4.60) with the $3.90 favourite Mr Markou three quarters of a length away third.

Laing said he may look to the Sires’ Produce Stakes at Morphettville on April 30 with the two-year-old.

Jaws Of Steel is the first horse he has prepared for owner Jonathan Munz.

“There’s some nice races coming up over 1400 metres and 1600 metres for two-year-olds, an autumn series, and there’s also the Sires’ in Adelaide that he’d be well placed in,” Laing said.

Last year’s Mornington Guineas winner The Barrister went on to win at his next start in the Fernhill Handicap at Randwick before running fifth in the Champagne Stakes after which he was sold to Hong Kong.
