Lady Selkirk wins Silver Bowl Series Final
The decision to take on the colts and geldings in the Silver Bowl Series Final at Flemington has rewarded the connections of Lady Selkirk.
Trainer Matthew Williams opted to run the filly in Saturday’s $120,000 Silver Bowl Final for three-year-olds instead of the Rivette Series Final restricted to fillies.
“I was 50-50 but I took advice from a couple of experts, and it’s all worked out well,” Matthew Williams said.
Under a rails-hugging ride from Craig Williams, Lady Selkirk ($5.50) edged clear inside the final 200m of Saturday’s 1600m race to win by three quarters of a length from Sir Sagamore ($12).
Tasmanian Derby winner Jerilderie Letter ($7), who carried topweight of 60kg, was another long neck third.
Lady Selkirk made it back-to-back wins at Flemington with her victory on Saturday, but halfway up the straight her trainer admitted he had concerns as the filly was on the fence and needing a gap.
“But he (Williams) got the split and she’s got a real desire to attack the line, which for a racehorse is great,” Williams said.
Lady Selkirk is a half-sister to stablemate Turnitaround who also won twice at Flemington in his most recent preparation.
