Ken’s Dream firms for Group 1 Caulfield Guineas

Ken's Dream

KEN’S Dream remained unbeaten for champion trainer Darren Weir when it won the McKenzie Stakes at Moonee Valley on Saturday and it has subsequently firmed in for the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas.

It should be happy times for Weir heading into the Melbourne spring carnival with Ken’s Dream, but he’s worried the horse is too fit and has no improvement left this campaign.

Following its all-the-way win on Saturday, Weir expressed his concern that it’s already run its grand final, but he hasn’t ruled out more racing this spring.

“It’s a bit of a concern that he’s rock-hard fit, you know, and there is still a long way to go,” Weir said.

“The little concern would be whether there is much more to come. When I looked at him in the yard I thought ‘oh, you are light enough for where you are at this stage of your preparation’ so that’s going to be the tough thing now, if he [has] to stop or whether we just space his runs.

“That’s the concern, but that’s the beauty of the beach. You can go down there for a month and muck around down there.”

Ken’s Dream won by nine lengths on debut at Echuca and was heavily-backed to win again at Moonee Valley ($2.10 at CrownBet). It went straight to the front which is ideal around the track and it held on well from a closing Dam Ready and Throssell.

“The plan was to sit outside the leader but when he found the front, they didn’t look to be going too quick early and he was able to kick away in the straight,” Weir said.

“But it’s a hard thing to do obviously to win a maiden in the bush and then to come to town and win a listed race.”

Weir suggested that Ken’s Dream could evolve into a into middle distance horse which will please punters which have taken the $17 at Sportsbet for the Caulfield Guineas (1600m).

“He’ll definitely by a seven-furlong (1400m) horse and he might even get out a bit further than that because he’s a lovely relaxed horse and he relaxed well out in front today and he’d relax well if he got cover too,” Weir added.
