Kemp dares to dream with bargain-buy filly

Trainer Kevin Kemp admits a Group One win with Sold For Song is almost a fantasy.

But it’s not an impossibility.

Sold For Song is one of a large number of promising three-year-olds making their return to racing in the Listed Mick Dittman Plate (1000m) at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday.

The filly, who cost a mere $2500 at the Magic Millions sales, has won two of her three starts and been an unlucky second at the other.

She hasn’t raced since winning the Listed Gold Edition Plate at Doomben in December after which Kemp decided to put her away for the winter.

“Sold For Song was a Magic Millions horse but we didn’t pay up for the series in January,” Kemp said.

“After all you pay $2500 for a horse you don’t expect to be in line for a million-dollar race.

“I am glad we missed the January races because she has come back a stronger filly.

“It might be a bit short for her on Saturday and if it was Doomben I would think she faced a task.

“However, it is Caloundra and there is that long uphill straight.

“They are going to go very fast in this and she will be the one running on.”

Kemp believes Sold For Song would be suited in the Group Two Queensland Guineas (1600m) on June 11 but another big race on that day is in the back of his mind.

“Three-year-old fillies have a very good record in the Stradbroke Handicap,” he said.

“I know for a bloke like me to win a Group One race with a $2500 horse is probably a pipe dream.

“But you have got to have dreams in this business and who knows?”
