Keith Noud Quality racing preview
The Listed Keith Noud Quality at Doomben this Saturday features a strong field of 17. Last-start Doomben winner Hard Empire will start favourite ahead of Spurcraft and Sandbar. There’ll be plenty of speed involved here, with Master Jamie, Deep Image, Spurcraft, Stampe and Catesby all natural leaders.
Scallopini has an absolutely ripping first-up record, loves Doomben and goes great over 1200m. From barrier 14, Ben Thompson will get back in the run, but with the amount of speed likely to be engaged, it should set it up for him to run home strongly over the top of them. He’s only missed the place four times in his 23-start career, and we think he can keep that good record alive here at double-figure odds.
Hard Empire was a great winner in his Queensland debut 11 days ago and has very chance to go on with it here. The ex-South Australian ran fourth in the 2019 Goodwood Handicap when finishing only 1.3L off Behemoth, which is superior form for a race like this. Brad Stewart will ride for the first time, and they’ve drawn well in gate nine to settle just off the hot tempo. He could be in for a good prep and might be a roughie for futures markets once they open for a race like the Doomben 10,000 in May.
Freddie Fox Trot represents value here after he ran third to Hard Empire last time out. The rise in trip to 1200m should suit him, as will the fact that he should be rock-hard fit fourth up. Michael Cahill retains the ride, and he should get a nice cart across with Hard Empire from barrier 10. He was rumoured to be one of the next best things in Queensland racing two years ago, so if he can find some of that form, he is a love each-way chance in this.
