Just Got Lucky on trial for stakes race

Warrnambool trainer Daniel Bowman is hoping to have multiple runners at the upcoming local carnival, but he has other targets with three-year-old Just Got Lucky.

Just Got Lucky heads to Caulfield on Saturday for the Sandown Park (UK) Handicap where he will be on trial for a shot at a Group Two sprint in Adelaide.

Just Got Lucky won on debut at Warrnambool in January before finishing strongly to add a city win at his second start at Moonee Valley in mid-February.

The gelding suffered his first defeat at Mornington earlier this month.

After racing near the speed in a 1200m benchmark race against his own age, Just Got Lucky rallied late after the leader kicked away to finish fourth and was giving weight to all the placegetters.

Bowman said they were probably “a bit overconfident” and underestimated the impact of carrying 59kg with seven weeks between races.

“For not a very big horse, seven weeks between runs, to be only beaten three quarters of a length we thought he went really well,” Bowman said.

Bowman said Saturday’s race had been in the plans for Just Got Lucky regardless of the Mornington result.

“He goes into this against a similar field, he’s drawn a good gate so we’d expect him to be quite competitive,” he said.

“If all things go well and he can get a win on Saturday, we’ll look to take him to Adelaide a couple of weeks later for the Euclase Stakes for three-year-olds.”
