JJ Atkins betting tips & trifecta picks – Saturday, 6 June 2020

Thunder Mania racing news
Promising 2yo Thunder Mania looms as a dangerous outside chance in Saturday’s JJ Atkins.

Eagle Farm plays host to the last 2yo Group 1 race of the season this Saturday in the form of the 1400m JJ Atkins. A race that has seen the likes of Sizzling, Press Statement, The Autumn Sun and most recently, Prince Fawaz reign supreme in recent years, it shapes to be a cracker yet again. Rob Heathcote’s stable star, Rothfire, will jump the favourite after winning the Champagne Classic a fortnight ago. A number of the fancied runners drew poorly, which will only add to the already fascinating spectacle. Rothfire, Wild Ruler and Isotope will look to try and lead from the outside alleys.

Best Bet
Thunder Mania @ $26

We are siding with John Symons and Sheila Laxon’s Thunder Mania at double-figure odds. Shooting for a hat-trick, the Snitzel colt is one of only five runners to have had a crack at the 1400m after winning in good fashion at the Sunshine Coast three weeks ago. He has won three from four starts and has drawn beautifully in gate seven to settle midfield under Larry Cassidy. He won a trial on Tuesday in a final tune up before his biggest test to date. If the market hot-pots get caught in an early speed battle, Thunder Mania will be the horse proven at the seven furlongs and finish off hard over the top.

Next Best
Rothfire @ $3.80

The talented Rothfire is a deserving favourite and will be looking to be make it six wins from seven starts, with his only failure coming on a very heavy track in March. He was a dominant winner last start in beating a number of his main rivals here and will look to make every post a winner again. The sticky draw makes it awkward for Jim Byrne, as the Rothesay colt only knows one way and that is to lead. A lack of experience beyond 1200m could bring him unstuck if he is forced to work early to find the lead, but he is a definite winning chance if he can find the front without too much hassle. Has the form to win this.

Best Value
Macroura @ $6.50

Ciaron Maher & David Eustace are having a crack with their unbeaten filly Macroura. She is drawn to do no work from barrier two, most likely landing a spot right behind the speed under Andrew Mallyon. She has been brilliant in her three metropolitan Sydney wins to date and looks to be perfectly suited by the rise to 1400m being out of a Zabeel mare. She’s run some of the quickest sectionals in two of her races, which will be important here. Interestingly, all three of her wins have been on a rain-affected track, which she will not get on Saturday; however, she is likely to go just as well, if not better, on a firm surface. She is right in this, especially from the soft draw.
