Jim Byrne injured in barrier incident
Premier Brisbane jockey Jim Byrne is confident he will be fit to ride at Doomben after injuring his knee in a barrier mishap.
Byrne will miss Wednesday’s Ipswich meeting but expects to take his rides on Saturday.
He came off a two-year-old before the start of a Deagon barrier trial on Tuesday.
“It wasn’t my horse’s fault as he hit the front of the stalls,” Byrne said.
“He stood on my left knee which has swollen badly.
“I can’t crouch at the moment so I can’t ride. But I have had ice on it for hours and it seems to be responding.”
Byrne said he would visit the chiropractor on Wednesday and have further treatment later in the week.
“Getting banged around in steel cages is nothing new for jockeys. I can’t see why I won’t be right to ride on Saturday,” he said.
Byrne has ridden 52 metropolitan winners this season, one less than apprentice James Orman.
