Jessigee on black type path
An open-class win at Wairoa on Sunday has put Awapuni mare Jessiegee in contention for a couple of stakes races.
The Alamosa five-year-old mare’s effort in winning the Affco NZ Ltd Wairoa Cup (2100m) has convinced her Awapuni trainer Mike Breslin she is ready to step up to black type missions with her first stakes start being the Group 3 Cuddle Stakes (1600m) on March 16.
And if she shapes up in the Trentham event, she will start on her home course in the Group 2 LJ Hooker Manawatu Breeders (2000m) at on April 5.
‘’I’ve been waiting to run her over ground again and today was the day,’’ Breslin said. ‘’She did the job well and now I’ll freshen her up and have a go at the Cuddle Stakes, then she can go back up over ground in the Manawatu Breeders’.
‘’She’s got a good record at Trentham and could be a chance in the Cuddle, but the Manawatu Breeders will suit her even better.”

Lisa Allpress climbed aboard Jessiegee for the first time in Sunday’s Wairoa Cup and she went into the race with some confidence.
‘’I thought she would be a really good ride,’’ she said. ‘’She had been going good races and she’s a mare who could be one for bigger cups later on.’’
The Wairoa Cup was Jessiegee’s first win since October 2017, but between times she had picked up six placings. Her record now stands at four wins and eight placings from 19 starts.
Jessiegee is raced by her co-breeder Bill Gleeson, who stands her sire Alamosa at his Wellfield Lodge in Palmerston North.
She is from the Jetball mare St Jessie, who raced in Australia and New Zealand and won seven races, including the 2004 Group 3 Great Northern Challenge Stakes (1600m) at Ellerslie.
