Jeff wakes up for upset win

Toowoomba two-year-old Wake Up Jeff has taken the first step to a possible late winter carnival feature race with his upset win at Ipswich.

Wednesday’s QTIS 2YO (1570m) was expected to be an easy win for the odds-on favourite Meikas ($1.80).

After being caught deep early, Meikas went to the lead but was run down by Wake Up Jeff ($7) who went on to win by two lengths.

Nick Hahn, stable representative for trainer Mick Nolan, said Wake Up Jeff had been getting better as the races got longer.

“He hasn’t been easy to place because there aren’t a lot of two-year-old races over 1400 to 1600 metres,” Hahn said.

“Michael wants to take him through his grades and if he comes up to the standard run him one of the longer races late in the carnival.”

“The Phoenix Stakes (on June 3 at Eagle Farm) is over 1500 metres and that would be an option.”

Wake Up Jeff’s rider, apprentice Rebecca Williams, continued her good run for Nolan bringing up her sixth winner from 17 rides for the stable.
