Jay Hopkins wins the 2017 Cameron Handicap with Got Unders

Got Unders shows off his Cameron Handicap rug after an impressive victory at Newcastle on Friday.

JAY Hopkins scored a career highlight at Newcastle on Friday when his consistent gelding Got Unders won the Group 3 Cameron Handicap (1500m).

Some punters secured as much as $50 about the eight-year-old gelding prior to the race after a disappointing run on Saturday where he finished 13th at Rosehill.

However, Hopkins was able to work his magic within six days to turn the horse around and jockey Tim Clark was able to ride him a treat, settling just behind the leaders and powering home in the closing stages to defeat Sound Proposition.

Hopkins was elated with the victory – the biggest race he has won after taking out his trainer’s licence 12 months ago.

“It’s unbelievable – I am in a bit of shock but I am over the moon,” Hopkins told Horse Betting.

“I thought he had a rough chance – he is an honest horse so I knew he’d run well and I was hoping he’d be able to finish in the top five.

“He’s been competitive against fields as good as this before and he ran a place in a group 3 race here in Autumn – on his best day I knew he was up to running a race.”

Got Unders has now won seven races with 24 placings from 52 starts, his prize money earnings now in excess of $415,000.

The win was especially rewarding for Hopkins who also owns the son of Southern Image and Frantoio with his family.

“I bought him as a weanling so we’ve had him all the way through – he is an eight-year-old now so he’s been with us for a long time,” Hopkins said.

“We only have six in work but he is definitely the stable star and to win a group 3 in my first year of training is great – I couldn’t ask for anything more.”
