Jason Taylor set for Snow Secret ride in Wellington Cup

Snow SecretGROUP 1-winning jockey Jason Taylor will fly to New Zealand to partner Snow Secret in the Wellington Cup at Trentham this Saturday.

Taylor won the 2001 Stradbroke Handicap aboard Sincero and trainer Shaune Ritchie has asked Taylor to ride Snow Secret at 52kg.

Ritchie said it was Taylor’s Group 1-winning experience and his natural light weight that sealed the deal.

“It’s difficult to get an experienced Group 1-winning rider at 52 kilos and we’ve got a four-year-old who really hasn’t run against the more-hardened handicappers over two miles, so we needed to get the right type of jockey,” Ritchie said.

“We’ve been friends with Jason for many years and we’d always said if we had a decent one in a good race, we’d get him over if the opportunity arose – and here it is.

“I wouldn’t be bringing him over if the horse was just a go-round.”

Snow Secret had a brief campaign in Australia before running fifth at Ellerslie last start, but Ritchie blames himself for that defeat.

“We rode her upside down a bit last start trying to take advantage of barrier one but we’ll be riding her cold this weekend and she’ll be hitting the line stronger than most of them,” Ritchie said.
