Japonisme receives big wraps ahead of 2016 Magic Millions Sprint

JaponismeAFTER seeing the Chris Waller-trained Japonisme win the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes, fellow trainer Gerald Ryan is confident ahead of the Magic Millions Sprint in January.

The Ryan-trained King’s Troop has finished in behind Japonisme in two of its three career starts and the margins between the two has given Ryan confidence leading into the $1 million Magic Millions Sprint on the Gold Coast in January.

King’s Troop finished 1.5 lengths behind Japonisme on both occasions, including a second placing in the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes at Rosehill.

“That was only his first racing preparation as well so you would think he is going to improve off it,” Ryan said.

“He’ll be trialling at Rosehill in two weeks and then hopefully head to the Magic Millions Sprint.

“Whether he has a run before that I’m not sure yet.”

King’s Troop is a close relation to super sire Snitzel which Ryan trained and although Snitzel was quick out of the blocks as a two-year-old, King’s Troop has needed time to mature.

“He’s going terrific so far, and he’s definitely bigger and stronger now,” Ryan said.

“But he’s still got more [growing] to do.”

Ryan is also planning on taking stablemate Peace Force to the Magic Millions meeting on January 9.

“We’ll see after Saturday if she goes to the Villiers and then has a freshen-up or she might just have a freshen-up now and then go straight to the mares’ race,” he said.

“But you could run her in the Magic Millions or even the 1800 [metre] race, depending on what she does in the next month.”

Bookmakers have yet to release the full Magic Millions market, but Sportsbet.com.au has released the Magic Millions 2YO market
where Capitalist is the current $3.50 favourite.

Lee and Shannon Hope to continue training

Father and Son training duo Lee and Shannon Hope have won a stay of proceedings and will continue to train until February when their appeal will be heard by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

VCAT senior member Robert Davis granted the Hopes an interim stay of proceedings last Wednesday and on Tuesday this week he extended it until February 8, where there have been five days set for the appeal.

The Hopes’ appeal will not disrupt Racing Victoria’s cases against Danny O’Brien and Mark Kavanagh, which will be heard from next Monday by the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board.

Peter Moody’s high-profile cobalt case will start on December 14 and Horsebetting.com.au will have all the up-to-date details.

The Hopes have argued that while they do not dispute the finding of cobalt in their horses, it had not been their intention to race the horses with high levels of the drug, which they claimed came from feed contamination, supplements and medications.
