2020 Inglis Nursery betting preview

The two-year-olds step out at the Royal Randwick race meeting this Saturday for the Inglis Nursery. Run over 1000m for $500,000, the race will see nine debutants look to claim the big cash. Overmann and Ashema sit on the $5 line, just ahead of Acrobat. Volcanic Rock showed speed in his debut, so expect him to be handy from the wide draw.

We are siding with Overmann here, albeit with little confidence. The son of Hinchinbrook was a nice trial winner at his only outing, and he’s in the hands of Team Hawkes and Tommy Berry, which is a recipe for success. He is somewhat poorly drawn out wide, but he should be able to get across with even luck. He looks hard to beat.

Three big ticks in Acrobat’s box are: Ciaron Maher and Dave Eustace; James McDonald; and the fact that he is Coolmore bred and owned, by Fastnet Rock. He finished second in a recent trial, only a tenth of a length off Overmann. Prior to that, he ran third at the trials to Athelric, who has raced well. Barrier 7 is ideal, and he’ll be right thereabouts.

Volcanic Rock could only win on debut at Canberra, and that he did, getting up by half a length over 1000m. Tim Clark and the Waterhouse & Bott team have a great record together and tend to control races from the front. Barrier 12 will see him cross the field and look to lead all of the way. He’s got the race-day experience on the board, which could give him an edge.
