Important winning run to continue

Trainer Tony Gollan hopes his recent streak of luck with owner Linda Huddy can stand up for at least one more race in the $1 million Magic Millions Cup.

Huddy and her husband Graham are dominant figures in Australian owner ranks through the deeds of horses such as the late Australian Derby winner Shoot Out and the Victoria Derby winner Preferment.

But even by their lofty heights, Linda Huddy has been having great success with Gollan and they have had seven winners in the past two months.

Huddy and Gollan combined to win a maiden (2200m) at Eagle Farm on Wednesday with What’s That.

“I always get a special kick winning for the Huddys because they put a lot into racing and have been trying to improve the staying stock in Queensland,” Gollan said.

Leading the way has been Most Important who picked up a $500,000 bonus last month for winning the Brisbane summer sprint triple crown.

Most Important can lift his total earnings for the summer to $1.5 million if he can win Saturday’s Cup (1400m).

Gollan sent Most Important for freshen-up after the gelding won the Buffering Quality (1300m) on New Year’s eve.

“He had a couple of days out at a farm but he was back this week and I was happy with his work on Tuesday,” Gollan said.

“With (Group One winner) Lucky Hussler in the field we have dropped two kilos in the weights which means we are in well. But there are several other horses which also are well off at the weights.”

Most Important is likely to have a full break after Saturday with the winter carnival in his sights later this year.

Fellow trainer Robert Heathcote is also pleased with the weights in the Cup with multiple Group winner Hopfgarten dropping 55.5kg.

“He has been crushed by weights of late and at least he will get a chance here,” Heathcote said.
