Hyperion Stakes betting tips – Saturday, 13 June 2020

Velvet King horse racing news
The Velvet King is among the favourites for the Hyperion Stakes after a near-miss in the Belmont Sprint.

Western Australian racing stays at Belmont this weekend with the Group 3 Hyperion Stakes headlining the nine-race program. The track is currently rated in the soft range and the rail goes out 8m for the entire circumference of the course. A number of runners come out of the Belmont Sprint a fortnight ago, including the trifecta of Perfect Jewel, The Velvet King and Angelic Ruler. The Velvet King shares the top line of betting with Mississippi Delta at most online bookmakers and will look to lead alongside Abdicator.

Free racing tips for Hyperion Stakes 2020

Best Bet
Gatting @ $8.50

It will nearly be nine months to the day since Gatting upset Mystic Journey in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington, which is good enough to get the 6yo back in the winners’ stall. The Group 1 winner ran a very good fourth in the Belmont Sprint second up, suggesting that the mile third up will be perfect conditions for him. A bit of sting out of the ground will suit Gatting too. The Hard Spun gelding is a three-time winner at the track and jockey Kyra Yuill has won on him before. He should get a good run from barrier 11 and should be too strong late.

Next Best
The Velvet King @ $3.80

We were heavily in The Velvet King’s corner when a beaten favourite last start behind Perfect Jewel in the Belmont Sprint, where he looked to have the race shot to bits before losing in the narrowest of margins. He is a one-time winner at the Belmont mile and is drawn perfectly in gate four to make it a second win at this track and trip. Mitch Pateman stays on the 4yo and will be hoping to go one better on Saturday. He will roll forward from the soft draw and no doubt look the winner at some point in the straight.

Best Value
Mississippi Delta @ $3.60

William Pike sticks with Mississippi Delta, who will appreciate the rise in distance to 1600m after finishing strongly into seventh last start in the Belmont Sprint. The High Chaparral mare has a win to her name over 1600m and on a wet track, which could be an advantage as she has just her second run this campaign. Grant and Alana Williams have a strong hold on Western Australian racing and this looks their best chance here despite also having Belmont Sprint winner Perfect Jewel in the field. The 1600m will suit Mississippi Delta.
