Honey Toast delivers for Toowoomba in Cup

The weight of expectation as a hometown favourite wasn’t enough to stop tough stayer Honey Toast from winning the Toowoomba Cup.

Honey Toast, backed from $3 to $1.80 favouritism, raced away to beat Iggi Pop ($13) by 1-1/2 lengths.

Young trainer Ben Currie, 24, said he felt surprisingly relaxed going into the race despite the high expectations from his local crowd.

“Sure there was plenty of pressure but I knew he had done well,” Currie said.

“He was spot-on today and I wouldn’t have swapped him for any other horse.

“At this stage he will head to races like the Ipswich Cup and Caloundra Cup and we might even consider the Brisbane Cup.

“We don’t know how good he is.

“I am a Toowoomba boy and it is a big thrill to win this race especially with all the support he got around town.”

Trainer Peter Robl is also likely to press on to a Cups campaign with Iggy Pop who was having only his third run back from a long spell.

Trainer Desleigh Forster only decided to run Too Good To Refuse on race morning but he went on to win the Toowoomba Guineas (1600m).

“All week we were going to run and then we weren’t going to run. The barrier and the hard track had me worried but in the end I decided to run him and it has paid off,” she said.

Jockey Ryan Wiggins allowed Too Good To Refuse ($3.50) to drop out early but he stormed down the outside to beat the favourite Havasay ($3.20) by a long neck.

“That was the perfect way to ride him but we haven’t been able to do that because of various factors,” Forster said.”
