Hill Stakes 2020 betting odds, tips & form

Kolding
Kolding claimed the Group 1 George Main Stakes to post his first win in almost 12 months.

A Group 1-worthy field has assembled for the Group 2 Hill Stakes, which is one of the feature races on a blockbuster card at Royal Randwick. A field of nine is set to do battle, after the scratchings of the Chris Waller pair Finche and Verry Elleegant.

This year’s running looks set to be a battle between three genuine Group 1 thoroughbreds. Fierce Impact has come up a $2.30 favourite after his impressive win in the Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington three weeks back when holding out Russian Camelot, while Kolding and Avilius are well in the market after their run in the George Main Stakes a fortnight ago.

The race is set to jump at 2:10pm AEST on Saturday, October 3.

Last year’s Golden Eagle winner Kolding returned to the winners circle for the first time since that day in November last year when taking out the Group 1 George Main Stakes a fortnight ago. Despite looking defeated with 100 metres to go, Tommy Berry was able to lift him off the canvas to give connections there second Group 1. Chris Waller chose to scratch him from the Epsom Handicap later in the day and opted to run in the Hill Stakes. Notably, James McDonald hops back aboard the 5YO gelding, with an impressive record of three wins from four starts on the star galloper. The key to Kolding is getting him on a good track, which is what he gets here and from the inside barrier he looks set to get the run of the race.

The Godolphin star hasn’t won in over a year now, which may deter punters from backing him and taking the favourite instead. However, he has a 50% winning strike rate when 3rd up into a campaign and produced the best sectionals between the 800m-200m in the George Main Stakes. It meant he peaked on his run, but gets to his preferred distance here of 2000 metres where he has won three times. In a smaller field here, he maps to be closer to the leaders and will be hard to hold out late.

His run in the Kingston Town Stakes looks a lot worse on paper than what it actually was. He was some 10 lengths off the leaders when entering the home straight but made up several lengths in the straight. He produced the best last 800 metres of the race, and if he can do that again here he looks a genuine knockout hope, especially given the fact Just Thinkin’ will make sure there is a genuine tempo in the race.
