Hannans Handicap 2020 betting tips & form guide
The Listed Hannans Handicap at 4:50pm AWST on Thursday is the feature on the eight-race card at Kalgoorlie. First run in 1897, the 1400m sprint has attracted 10 geldings to this year’s running. The favourite has prevailed in each of the last three years, but they had not fared all that well prior to that. This year’s favourite, Massimo, carries the top weight of 59kg and gives away at least 2.5kg to the rest of the field.

Adam Durrant’s star gelding maps to take up the running and will take a power of beating in this year’s edition of the Hannans Handicap. He will need to carry the top weight of 59kg, but that didn’t seem to bother him when hauling 60kg two starts back at Belmont. He has won four of his last five races and rarely runs a bad one. Massimo has only missed the quinella three times in 18 starts and looks far too classy for this field.
After a six-week spell, Luke Fernie’s galloper gets back to a track where he is near bombproof. He has raced here on eight occasions and scored in seven of those. He has not run at the track since the 2019 Hannans Handicap when finishing midfield, and this seems to be a field he can take down outside of the favourite. Pym’s Royale will settle several lengths off Massimo as a backmarker, but he could swoop down the outside at nice odds if the tempo is genuine as expected.
Justine Erkelens’ 7YO gelding was runner-up to Massimo when they met three weeks back in the Listed Farnley Stakes at Belmont, where he went down by 1.5 lengths. He does gain an extra 1.5kg from that run, but he still has a 3.5kg advantage on the favourite and will be racing up on speed as well. If he can go with the favourite’s high tempo, then perhaps the weight advantage could pay dividends at the end of the race.
