Guineas bound Tarzino adapting well

Mick Price is mindful of getting the balance right as Tarzino prepares for his first interstate trip.

The Victoria Derby winner heads in Saturday’s Rosehill Guineas, his first of two scheduled starts in Sydney.

After the Guineas he will attempt to add the ATC Australian Derby to his spring Classic win before he is spelled with a view to the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.

Tarzino leaves Melbourne for Sydney on Wednesday night, a little later than Price would have liked but the way his races were programmed, the colt needed time to get over his Australian Guineas run.

Price was chasing victory in the Australian Guineas hoping to ensure Tarzino’s future as a stallion and he almost pulled it off with his short head second to Palentino.

“I wanted to run him in the Australian Guineas because if he had won that race, it’s the same race that Zabeel won, True Version won, and it gets him a home at stud,” Price said.

“I know O’Reilly and Darci Brahma ran second in it and are successful stallions, but it’s not quite the same.”

Price said Tarzino had adapted well to galloping right-handed at Caulfield and would have no problems handling the clockwise direction on Saturday.

The trainer’s only concern is how much work to give him before he leaves.

“He galloped the reverse way on Saturday morning with (stablemate) Top Ravine and he was good in his work,” Price said.

“He’ll go up Wednesday night but I’m just not sure what I’m going to do on Tuesday with him.”

There are 23 nominations for the Group One Guineas (2000m) including Le Romain and Press Statement who ran one-two in the Randwick Guineas.

Tarzino’s stablemates Extreme Choice and Flying Artie, the market leaders for Saturday’s $3.5 million Golden Slipper at Rosehill, will have a course proper gallop at Rosehill on Tuesday morning.

Extreme Choice beat Flying Artie in the Blue Diamond Stakes and is the $2.80 Slipper favourite ahead of his stablemate at $6.
