Guardini gets first Australian win in G3

Guardini’s first win in Australia has given trainer Lee Freedman something to celebrate at Randwick.

Malaguerra was a disappointing sixth in the Group One All Aged Stakes in the major race on the card.

But Guardini, who has raced in France, Germany and the United States, gave the Freedman stable success as he won the Group Three Japan Racing Association Plate on Saturday.

Malaguerra hasn’t been the only disappointment for the stable Freedman during the Sydney autumn carnival.

Most of Guardini’s owners have shares in Our Ivanhowe, a German Group One winner who has struggled with injury and form issues since coming to Australia.

“The guys that are in him put a lot of money into horses and put a lot of trust in me,” Freedman said.

“We’ve had a lot of bad luck with Our Ivanhowe, but we got a result today.”

The win booked another trip for the well-travelled Guardini.

“He’s definitely a Brisbane Cup horse,” Freedman said.

Jockey Hugh Bowman said despite sitting three-wide during the race the horse felt comfortable.

“He was in a beautiful rhythm throughout and he was dominant late I thought,” Bowman said.

“It’s so important to get your horse into a rhythm but gee he really worked into it well coming into the corner and he was very strong late.”

Index Linked was 1-1/2 lengths away in second and Havana Cooler finished third.

Freedman said he was confident once the horse had travelled well during the run.

“If I could have got on him with 600 metres to go I would have,” Freedman said.

“I was saying to the strapper Dave in the run ‘don’t worry too much he is three deep they are used to doing that overseas’.”
