Aspect has bigger two-year-old targets in sight after opening Stakes Day with a win at Flemington

TONY McEvoy unearthed a potential Golden Slipper or Blue Diamond colt when Aspect won the Maribyrnong 2YO Plate at Flemington on Saturday.

The son of Pluck was given some practice down the straight and it paid off as it stretched out nicely to score at odds of $12 with CrownBet.

McEvoy also trained Azazel which finished in a dead-heat for fourth.

“Azazel, from the outset he was wanting to go left, unfortunately I didn’t have an opportunity to give him a look at the straight, whereas I did with Aspect and it really showed the benefit,” McEvoy said.

“He raced like a professional horse today and when he got to the front he went as straight as a gun-barrel.

“He’s a very good quality colt, he really impressed me. His length of stride in the finish was fantastic. That’s his career best for me and I’ve been watching him since we broke him in.”

McEvoy will now send both runners to the paddock with Aspect in line for a possible tilt at either the Golden Slipper or Blue Diamond Stakes.

“I’m going to put them aside. The big dance is in the autumn for two-year-olds,” McEvoy said.

“We’ll set him for the Slipper or the Diamond, we’ll make up our mind as we go along.”

2016 Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Kerrin McEvoy was in the saddle for his uncle Tony and he thinks the colt has a big future.

“Uncle Tony’s going good with his babies,” McEvoy said. “He’s light this filly, the teams done a good job with him.

“He did a good job at jumpouts down the straight, gave me a nice feel, but he gave me a much better feel today under race conditions.

“He’s not just a speed horse so he might get out a bit further. He carries himself well.

“There’s more to come from him.”

The Mick Price-trained Cao Cao finished in second placing with debut winner Wait For No One holding on well for fourth.
