Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap form and tips at Doomben, June 10

Stradbroke tips

THE Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap is one of the highlight races of the Brisbane winter carnival and we have form and tips for the sprinting feature and every other race on the card this Saturday.

A full field of superstars will run for the $1.5 million prize and despite the field not attracting any champion runners, there’s still a fair share of quality thoroughbreds in action which includes Clearly Innocent, Burning Front and rising superstar Bonny O’Reilly.

The feature racing doesn’t stop with the Stradbroke as the Group 1 J.J. Atkins and the Group 1 Queensland Derby are also on the bumper card at Doomben.

It’s the best day of punting during the carnival so sign up to Ladbrokes.com.au for enhanced odds on every runner in the Stradbroke.

Race 1 – James Boag’s Daybreak Lover (1200m)

Tactical Advantage showed the advantage the Sydney runners have during the carnival when winning at Doomben last start. The James Cummings-trained gelding was good enough to run in the Arrowfield Stakes and there aren’t many in this field with that resume. It opened at $4 and has been specked into $3.90, which suggests another good effort is in store for Saturday.

New Zealand runner Heroic Valour didn’t lose any admirers when running second in the Gold Coast Guineas and it will be better prepared with that run under its belt. The Te Akau-raced three-year-old hasn’t won for awhile now, but it has form close in behind the likes of Volpe Veloce and Start Wondering, which should hold up well in Australia. It has been lumped with a big weight and a wide draw, but don’t rule it out.

Race 1 tip: Tactical Advantage to win ($3.90) at Sportsbet.com.au

Race 2 – Makers Mark Hinkler Handicap (1200m)

Punters are wondering if Nancy will ever win another race, but it’s knocking on the door and this looks a top chance against this field. The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained mare has placed at its last two starts and it only narrowly missed running down With A Promise last start. This distance is slightly short of its best, but Hugh Bowman rides and the $4.40 is a nice price.

Miss Gunpowder is a professional type for Lindsay Park which has won five from 15 starts. The four-year-old scored a nice win at Caulfield over Boomwaa, which races in the Gold Topaz on Friday, and it has since finished second in the Proud Miss Stakes at Morphettville. That came behind Fuhryk and carrying only 54kg in this is a steal. It will settle back and storm home late in the piece.

Race 3 – Radiotab The Wayne Wilson (1600m)

Col ‘n’ Lil will race for Yulong Investments for the first time on Saturday and it could start with a bang. The five-year-old mare comes into this having won the Lord Mayor’s Cup on a heavy track, but it does have good form on the dry as well. It does tend to mix its form which can make it hard for punters to follow, but it has been respected in the betting at $4.40.

Religify was never going to win last start on the heavy track, but conditions are much more in its favour this time around. The Chris Waller-trained gelding has won 11 times on a good track and it brings a fair amount of class into this. Expect Bowman to settle close to the pace and it should have the turn-of-foot to finish over the top of these with the right run in transit.

Race 3 tip: Religify to win ($3.20) at Sportsbet.com.au

Race 4 – Bundaberg Rum Dane Ripper (1350m)

Raiment was beaten on its merits in the Glenlogan Park Stakes last start, but it has shown the ability to bounce back and we think it’s better on the dry ground. The Darren Beadman-trained filly scored an impressive 4.5-length win in the James Carr two back and getting the inside draw here will allow it to settle on the pace without doing much work. The big question is whether Bonny O’Reilly runs, but it has drawn barrier 16 so it’s highly unlikely. $3.90 on offer.

Miss Debutante is over the odds at $8. The Waterhouse/Bott-trained filly has already defeated two subsequent winners this campaign and it fought on well last start behind Eckstein. The well-bred daughter of Fastnet Rock defeated In Times Of War in April before beating Snitty Kitty by over two lengths in the Denises Joy. That’s strong form and punters are getting great value.

Race 5 – Ascot Green Queensland Guineas (1600m)

Niccanova has burst onto the scene with its win in the Fred Best Classic last start. The Steve Tregea-trained gelding produced a big finish at Eagle Farm and although that track was throwing up mixed results the burst of speed should be respected. It defeated subsequent Highway Handicap winner Zamax prior to that, but this race is another rise in class. $3.50 is a touch short, but take nothing away from the three-year-old.

Oak Door mixes its form, but it’s tough to beat on its day. The Robert Smerdon-trained colt won the Autumn Stakes earlier this year when beating Attention by a length and it has run in unsuitable races since. Craig Williams riding is a positive and it might be sent forward from barrier 14, which isn’t the ideal barrier but it’s capable of jumping and running.

Race 5 tip: Oak Door to place ($2.80) at CrownBet.com.au

Race 6 – BMW J.J. Atkins (1600m)

Capital Gain has been given a good chance by trainer Paul Butterworth and we’re respecting his comments. The two-year-old produced a big finish in the Sires’ Produce Stakes, despite finishing nine lengths away from winner and race-rival Melody Belle. Taking form out of that Eagle Farm meeting could make it difficult for punters, but it has talent and it is at value odds of $8.50 after opening at $7.50.

Favouritism deservedly belongs with Melody Belle which showed them a clean pair of heels in the Sires. The Autridge/Richards-trained filly scored by almost five lengths which backed up its Sires’ win in New Zealand, where it also managed to win the Karaka Million. The Kiwis know how to come over to Brisbane and win the features – this looks another classy type from over the Tasman and it has been specked into $2.10 after opening at $2.20.

Race 6 tip: Melody Belle to win ($2.10) at Ladbrokes.com.au

Race 7 – Channel Seven Queensland Derby (2200m)

[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1134638_07]

Volatile Mix is a quality gelding for Darren Weir which will likely drop back from the wide draw. The staying-bred type by Pentire is made for these races and it showed in the Grand Prix last start that it should be respected. Weir’s record in the age-group staying races is fantastic and this South Australian Derby winner should be finishing fast down the outside. Eagle Farm would have been more suitable, but respect at $6.

Shocking Luck didn’t handle the track last start and it wasn’t given a great ride by Opie Bosson. The son of Shocking was a brilliant winner of the Rough Habit Plate on this track two back and that’s the form punters should be taking note of. It won’t have to do much work from barrier one and we’re expecting Bosson to take a sit this time around. It’s another top chance for the Kiwis and $5 is a fair price.

Race 7 tip: Volatile Mix to win ($6) at Sportsbet.com.au

Race 8 – Stradbroke Handicap (1350m)

The time will come where Counterattack wins a group one and it could here. The Waller-trained four-year-old has been close in recent times, which includes a second placing behind Redzel in the Doomben 10,000. It’s not good enough to win the Sydney or Melbourne features, but from a good barrier draw it could land on the speed and be tough to get past. It has won and placed at Doomben and it will have its fair share of punting support at $7.50.

The interesting runner is Mackintosh and we get the feeling it’s Chris Waller’s top choice. The four-year-old is fresh up where it has won both starts to date and it also boasts an unbeaten record on this track. Having not raced since December should be a negative as it gets up quickly and having Kerrin McEvoy in the saddle suggests Waller prefers it over Counterattack. It could be the underrated runner in this race at $9.50.

Race 8 tip: Mackintosh to win ($9.50) at Ladbrokes.com.au

Race 9 – Evergreen Turf Brisbane Cup (2200m)

Neverland was making late ground in the Premier’s Cup last start and its first win outside of Perth will come shortly. Now with Darren Weir, the five-year-old has been warming up over its last couple of starts and it could be ready to strike on a good surface where it has won all six of its races. Bookmakers have it even in the market at $4.80.

Zambezi Warrior could cap off a memorable day for Te Akau. The son of Pentire finished second in the Premier’s Cup despite having a tough run in transit and dropping in weight to 53kg will do it plenty of good. We’re unsure if having Jeff Lloyd in the saddle will suit the four-year-old, but he’s a lightweight rider and the $5.50 on offer should be snapped up.

Race 9 tip: Zambezi Warrior to win ($5.50) at Sportsbet.com.au
