Group 1 Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot betting and tips

Coronation Stakes

THE Group 1 Coronation Stakes is a career-making race which has been won by many top fillies. Last years winner Ervedya beat home Found and both have gone on to win top international races, including the Breeders’ Cup Turf in the U.S.

The 1600m race for three-year-old fillies is a race which kicks off the career of many top thoroughbreds and the field this year fits the bill. There are five last-start winners which includes the China Horse Club-owner Jet Setting.

The Adrian Paul Keatley-trained filly has won three of its past four starts which included the Group 1 Irish 1000 Guineas at The Curragh. It’s the current favourite with bookmakers and the recent $1.3 million purchase by China Horse Club representative, Michael Wallace, looks a top Royal Ascot contender.

“She’s a Classic winner and there are very few of them around,” Wallace said. “She’s a very sound and athletic filly. Fillies of that quality are very sought after.

“It’s great to be a part of Ascot, for sure.”

Horses that can beat Jet Setting

Jet Setting is the best-performed horse in the race, but there are some horses which could topple the favourite. The John Gosden-trained Nathra has won three races from six starts and its last two starts have come at group 1 level.

The daughter of Iffraaj ran fifth in the Group 1 English 1000 Guineas which was a good effort and it backed that up with a second placing in the Group 1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches last start. The big-race experience will do it plenty of good in this and the $7 is a nice price at Crownbet.

Nemoralia is on the second line of betting at $6 which is a touch short for our liking, but it still remains a winning chance. The American filly is bred by More Than Ready and was a last-start winner at York in the Memorial Stakes. Its best start was a second placing in the Group 1 Frizette Stakes at Belmont Park behind Nickname and based on the market, it clearly has enough ability to take this out.

Qemah is representing France for trainer Jean-Claude Rouget and it has two group 1 placings to its name. The filly by Danehill Dancer finished third in the Prix Marcel Boussac behind the classy Ballydoyle at just its third career start. It also ran third last time out behind La Cressionniere and race-rival Nathra.

It should have come through that run well and it looks like another solid each way chance at $8 with Sportsbet.

Our final chance to upset the favourite is Qatar Racing’s Now Or Never. The three-year-old filly finished third behind Jet Setting in the Irish 1000 Guineas and second behind it in the Irish 1000 Guineas Trial. It hasn’t been able to get past the favourite on past occasions, but it clearly has the ability and punters are getting a good price.

It’s currently paying $13 at Sportsbet and is at 20/1 on some U.K markets, but that price is too high for a filly which hasn’t done much wrong in seven career starts. It has drawn well enough in barrier eight and it should pay a good place for a top three finish.
