Grafton Carnival betting tips – Day 3 – Thursday, 9 July 2020

Grafton horse racing

Thursday racing in NSW is headlined by the Grafton Cup, which is part of an eight-race program on the final day of the July Carnival. The track is rated a Good 4 with the rail remaining in the true position. This is last of three race days at the carnival, so the outside could be the place to be. Race 1 is set to jump at 12:15pm AEST, with the main event at 3:55pm.

Best Bet
Race 6 – Two Big Fari @ $2.50

Todd Howlett’s promising gelding Two Big Fari returns to the races after a 13-week spell since his fifth placing in this year’s Country Championship Final, where he was beaten only 0.6 lengths. That is the only time the four-year-old failed to finish in the top two in his eight career starts (8:5-2-0). He is a winner first up in the past and was a trial winner at Newcastle a month ago to be wound up for this first-up assignment. From barrier 15, Grant Buckley will go forward and may opt to settle in the three-wide line with cover in a race that has lots of speed on paper. He is a class above these and will be hoping to win to get a look in for the $1.3 million Kosciusko in October.

Next Best
Race 8 – Plague Stone @ $2.25

James Cummings takes just the one runner to Grafton on Thursday in the form of the talented Plague Stone. The Lonhro gelding races very well when fresh, with two wins and two seconds from five first-up performances. Jason Collett takes the ride from barrier 12. He should be back of midfield and storming home over the top of them. Plague Stone’s easy trial win at Hawkesbury three weeks ago was bullish and we expect him to be winning first up here in a race that he seems to be perfectly placed.

Best Bet
Race 5 – Pure Rubick @ $13

Pure Rubick has been knocking on the door this prep, placing twice and running fourth and fifth at his most recent efforts. The gelding ran fourth on debut at Wyong behind Matowatakpe, which was an impressive winner at Warwick Farm on Wednesday. His last start wasn’t awful when a beaten favourite at Muswellbrook, coming from off the speed. At his seventh start, he is due for a win and finds himself in a suitable race from barrier seven under Koby Jennings. He should find himself handy to the speed over the 1200m journey and be hard to run past. The $13 is worth something each way.
